Tracking a year of coronavirus in Michigan On March 10, 2020, the state of Michigan reported its first confirmed case of coronavirus. Immediately after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer issued a state of emergency in an effort to slow the virus spread. What followed was months of social distancing, closed businesses and schools, and a dramatic change in the way Michiganders live. One year later, the state has more than 600,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases, more than 15,000 deaths and a fractured society with lines drawn between those who believe in the virus, and the measures necessary to stop it, and those who do not. The DNR says the well-known aquatic pest was found in Marimo Moss Balls at Petco and PetSmart stores in Michigan, although it did not identify which specific locations. Moss balls generate oxygen and remove nitrates from aquarium tanks. They came under scrutiny last month when a Petco employee in Washington found the invasive mussels hiding among them in a Seattle store. Still, it's the Michigan Public Service Commission decides whether utilities can increase rates for customers. MORE The intentions of a teen boy are becoming clearer as news continues to unfold out of Newaygo, Michigan. A 16-year-old student detonated an explosive Monday at the school, injuring himself, four classmates and a teacher. A search warrant executed Monday evening at the home led to the discovery of multiple explosive devices. By Tuesday, the father of the boy was charged with one felony count of manufacturing explosive devices and one misdemeanor count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor by manufacturing those devices with his son. Now we find out that the son, who lost most of both thumbs in the explosion, brought the homemade bomb to school to "show friends" before it accidentally exploded in his hands.
