Hunters are donning camouflage and blaze orange as they head out into the woods today, marking the start of Michigan's 2023 firearm deer season. Deer hunters can show off their skills and win prizes by bringing their freshly killed bucks to a buck pole contest on opening day. Here's a roundup of a few buck pole events in mid-Michigan on Wednesday. To help ensure everyone has a safe season, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources has released its annual list of the 10 best practices for hunters. |

Trump will appear on Michigan’s 2024 primary ballot, judge rules |
Decision made: Former President Donald Trump will appear on Michigan’s 2024 primary ballot after a judge in the Court of Claims ruled Tuesday Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson “does not have a clear legal duty, or the authority under Michigan law” to determine if a candidate is disqualified from the ballot. Burnout: In recent years, the right to vote has started to feel more like a chore for some Americans. The trend of voter apathy has election experts raising concerns ahead of 2024. Alongside existing barriers to voting, there are increasingly more pervasive potential issues on the horizon. Also in court: Following a near two-day emergency hearing, a judge has allowed three marijuana shops in Menominee to reopen after a 10-day hiatus. |

Telling trans customers to use ‘pet groomer’ is a First Amendment right, Michigan hairstylist says |
A Traverse City hair stylist who came under fire this summer for telling transgender customers to “seek services at a local pet groomer,” is now suing the city and three of its residents over what she believes in a violation of the salon’s constitutional rights. Speaking of lawsuits: After the fifth day of what was supposed to be a two-day termination hearing, Ottawa County still has not voted whether to fire its administrative health officer, nor has it reached a settlement agreement with her over ongoing litigation. More in public interest: Stellantis is offering buyouts to 6,400 non-union employees with at least five years of corporate service in a second round of job cuts this year. |

Gone hunting: Warm temperatures and dry weather are expected for opening day of Michigan’s regular firearm deer hunting season, though things will be a bit breezy. Here's a look at Wednesday's forecast. As a cold front approaches Michigan it will draw warm air northward into our state. While most of us will miss record-high temperatures, one city could tie or set a new record warm temperature this week. Also outside: Stargazers, keep your fingers crossed for clear skies this week, as the storied Leonids meteor shower reaches its peak activity night of the year on Friday, November 17. |

Giving back: Derek Jeter returned to Kalamazoo Central on Tuesday to officially unveil a state-of-the-art baseball and softball complex with Cal Ripken Jr. and family on hand. Recognition: While there is considerable admiration for Sam LaPorta this season, and rightly so, there is another tight end on the Lions' roster who consistently excels when called upon: Brock Wright. Another loss: The Atlanta Hawks secured a 126-120 victory over the Pistons at Little Caesars Arena on Tuesday night. This extended the Pistons’ losing streak to nine games and dropped them to 0-2 in the NBA’s In-Season Tournament. |
