In today's newsletter, Coast Guard crew carrying Christmas Tree Ship load is crossing Lake Michigan, 25 Michigan hospitals earned lower safety grades in 2022, and a Northern Michigan town will be featured on Hallmark Channel’s Christmas Cam. |
I hope everyone had an amazing Thanksgiving weekend with a load of delicious food, time spent with family, and maybe even some Black Friday shopping. With 59% of shoppers saying the deals are too good to pass up, I expect a few of you were out and about. Did the 28-25 lost for the Detroit Lions to the Buffalo Bills damper the holiday mood? It snapped their 3-game winning streak, but the team calls it process. If you're wondering how I've made it this far without mentioning Michigan's win against Ohio State, don't worry, for someone who just witnessed Michigan being 12-0 for the first time in their lifetime, it's coming. |

Coast Guard crew carrying Christmas Tree Ship load is crossing Lake Michigan |
A special delivery: The crew of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw is motoring down Lake Michigan and nearing Chicago, where its load of more than 1,200 Christmas trees will be used to recreate the holiday spirit of Michigan’s ill-fated Christmas Tree Ship, which sank in late November 1912. Coming together: The rugged, 240-foot icebreaker left Cheboygan on Saturday after volunteers from the nearby Wolverine High School and the community helped the Mackinaw’s crew load the hundreds of net-wrapped trees onto the cutter’s fantail.
Speaking of trees: Will there be a Christmas tree shortage this year? The Christmas tree experts at Michigan State University say no despite tighter supply and increased demand. |

Ohio must put Lake Erie on ‘pollution diet’ under settlement terms |
The state of Ohio must develop a mandatory cap on algae-fueling nutrient pollution entering Lake Erie under the terms of a proposed court settlement. Public comment is being taken until Dec. 12 on a federal consent decree that would force Ohio to create a new plan for curbing nutrient runoff from farms and livestock operations by developing a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) for the Maumee River watershed.
An explanation: TMDLs are known as “pollution diets” and are created for impaired waterbodies to identify how much pollution they can handle before water quality suffers too much. Under the negotiated deal terms, the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency has until June 30 to finalize a new TMDL plan. Going back to MI: Skiing, boating, biking. Michigan is home to a roster of outdoor sports. But it’s more than just fun and games. Outdoor recreation last year in Michigan grew into a booming $10.8 billion industry that employs nearly 10,000 people. |

Northern Michigan town to be featured on Hallmark Channel’s Christmas Cam |
Livestream holiday magic: Harbor Springs’ “showstopping” holiday displays evokes “the real-life essence of the festive communities featured in Hallmark holiday movies” and it’s going to be featured on the Christmas Cam. See lights another way:Guests can now enjoy the Nite Lites holiday light display through the comfort of a train. Between Nov. 24 and Dec. 31 – including holidays – motorists can drive through the nearly six miles of holiday light displays at the Michigan International Speedway, 12626 U.S. 12 near Brooklyn. Make a splash: Bavarian Inn Lodge officials say a planned $80 million expansion will make the indoor waterpark and family entertainment center Michigan’s largest. It is expected to be complete in the spring of 2024, with some parts of the new family fun center opening in late fall 2023. |
