Whitmer signs $616M bill to relieve school debt, invest in infrastructure |
Upgrades: Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed a nearly $616 million supplemental bill into law Monday, Dec. 18, that provides funding to fix roads and bridges, expands access to clean drinking water and invests in colleges and universities to train highly skilled workers in Michigan. Speaking of roads: The Michigan Department of Transportation invested almost $2 billion this year to improve and maintain its share of the roads throughout the state. More repairs: An Ypsilanti bridge that closed when temperatures were in the 80s has officially reopened, but even after more than five months of repairs the construction isn’t yet complete. |

EPA to crack down on water pollution from slaughterhouses |
Cleaning up: The Environmental Protection Agency proposed new regulations on slaughterhouses and animal rendering operations in hopes of reducing the amount of pollutants such as nitrogen and phosphorus entering the environment through wastewater. Restoration: The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is seeking landowners in the Lake Erie and Saginaw Bay watersheds willing to add wetlands to their property. Lead testing: Flint’s water remained below the federal action limit for lead during the second half of 2023 but ticked up higher than test results from the first six months of this year, according to the state. |

Here are five reasons why Michigan can do it this year. On the court: The Atlanta Hawks beat Detroit 130-124 on Monday night, handing the Pistons their 24th consecutive loss. Detroit is two losses away from matching the NBA’s longest losing streak in one season.
