Whitmer to address education in first State of the State address

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer plans to highlight her plans for education in Michigan during her first State of the State address next week. During a recent stop at Cops & Doughnuts bakery in Clare, Whitmer shared her intentions with a group of small business owners and former educators. "I think you're going to see something different this time around," said Whitmer, when pressed about the fact previous governors had broached the same issue in their State of the State addresses. "I need you to help me get it done." The address is set for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 5. MORE

Stay off roads during Monday's winter storm, forecasters urge

Forecasters were predicting a nasty winter storm Monday, with 12+ inches of snow expected in some areas. A winter storm warning was issued for a broad swath of Michigan from 1 a.m. Monday until 7 p.m. The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids cautioned against travel, as blowing snow was expected to create life-threatening conditions for motorists. Just days after the storm, dangerous cold is expected across the state. And here we thought we were going to get away with a mild Michigan winter. MORE

MSU had been the only B1G team undefeated in conference play heading into Sunday's matchup. The Spartans now sit at 18-3 on the season. MORE

The Blizzard of '78 brought Michigan snow 'so deep, you couldn't even shovel it'

K Monday's snowstorm may not be reaching blizzard levels, but it's bound to dredge up memories for some old-timers. Forty-one years ago, the Great Blizzard of 1978 socked Michigan, dropping 18 inches of snow over a 24-hour period. We found some old photos from the Ann Arbor area, showing how residents responded to a storm that brought snow "so deep, you couldn't even shovel it." MORE
