Why Michigan could start seeing more rainbows |
Silver lining: A new study by researchers at University of Hawaii at Manoa claims that climate change will produce more rainbows in places with northern latitudes like Michigan. If the trend continues, Michigan's rainbow days could increase by 5 to 10 days in the western part of the state and 10 to 20 days in the eastern part of the state. Why does climate change matter? Researchers found that areas of the world that are warming will see less snow and more rain, according to the study. As a result, mountainous regions or places farther north on the globe are more likely to see an increase in rainbows. Speaking of rain: It's been a dry growing season across Mid-Michigan, an anomaly for the area. Flint was the driest of the major observation sites with only 14.62 inches of rain this growing season, 5.62 inches drier than average. Some places Grand Rapids, Muskegon, Kalamazoo and Lansing all ran short on rain this growing season too. |

Here's the key cities and counties that helped Whitmer swing Michigan blue in 2018. The latest in campaigns:Wyoming Republican Liz Cheney was in East Lansing Tuesday to support U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin, D-Lansing. Though they have stark ideological differences, the evening centered on a single shared priority: "preserving American democracy." |

Michigan is now home to one of the biggest Van Gogh collections in the world. |
Art aficionados, rejoice: After six painstaking years in the making, one of the biggest collections of Van Gogh original works in the world can now be seen in Michigan. The "Van Gogh in America" exhibit at the Detroit Institute of Arts features 74 original pieces of art created by the Dutch painter. History in the making: This isn't the first time the Detroit Institute of Art has made headlines for housing Van Gogh's work. In 1922, DIA purchased Van Gogh’s “Self-Portrait,” becoming the first U.S. museum to acquire one of his paintings.
How can I see it? The Van Gogh originals are on display at the DIA through Jan. 22, 2023 at the “Van Gogh in America” exhibition. Tickets to the exhibition are $7 - $29 and can be purchased here for weekdays and here for weekends. Residents of Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties receive a discount.
