Why Leelanau County ranks No. 1 in Michigan vaccination rates At this point, 75% of Leelanau’s 16 and older population has gotten at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and 67% are fully immunized -- easily making Leelanau the No. 1 county in the state for vaccination rates, with adjoining Grand Traverse County at No. 2. A rural county of not quite 22,000 residents, the Leelanau peninsula juts into Lake Michigan, forming Michigan’s “pinkie finger” in the northwest Lower Peninsula. Some say it is somewhat surprising that Leelanau is leading the way. “You’re not looking at a county that was just primed and ready for vaccine distribution,” said Casey Petz, superintendent of Suttons Bay Public Schools. Instead, they had to rely on virtual settings, a phone call or text message.
