Michigan’s cruise ship season begins with 665-foot Viking Octantis. |
Michigan’s cruise ship season kicked off yesterday with the Viking Octantis docking in Detroit before continuing north along the state’s eastern shoreline. Viking Octantis made its Great Lakes debut in 2022. It’s the largest cruise ship to sail the Great Lakes in the modern era. Hop aboard with this video tour we shot last year. Also cruising Michigan waters is one of the world's oldest loons, ABJ, with a broken bill tip that's likely a result of the love-triangle squabble. |

Will Michigan’s financial disclosure law reveal politicians’ long-hidden perks? It’s up to them. |
Last November, two-thirds of Michigan voters approved a constitutional amendment requiring Michigan’s state elected officials to disclose information about their personal finances for the first time. Info could stay hidden: Proposal 1 provides some broad disclosure requirements — descriptions of assets and debts, sources of earned and unearned income, memberships in organizations — without much more detail. Potential for significant holes: It’s led to a lot of unanswered questions. How specific should “sources” be? Should someone verify that the disclosures are truthful? For the most part, that’s now up to people who will file the disclosures to decide. |

Suspect arrested from 1988 Michigan homicide |
No longer a cold case: Cathy Swartz, 19, was stabbed numerous times and strangled while her 9-month-old daughter was in the next room on Dec. 2, 1988, in Three Rivers. Robert Waters, now 53, was arrested on Sunday, April 30, in Beaufort, South Carolina, on the charge of open murder. Also in 1988: A man convicted of a murder he committed at 16 has been resentenced, so he will no longer spend his whole life in prison. Patrick Jay Gray was originally sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the December 1988 fatal shooting of Austin Garrett, 23. More in crime: Sidney Pettigrew Jr. was 51 when he was gunned down while working out at the Rock Fitness Center near Linsey Boulevard in May 2018. Five years later, his death – which has sparked attempts to stop gun violence in Flint – remains unsolved. |

More than 50 Caribou Coffee locations to return to Michigan after decade-long absence |
Background: Once common in Michigan, the Minnesota-based coffee chain was founded in 1992 but largely left the state as part of a restructuring brought on when it was purchased by the German equity firm, JAB Holding Company, in 2013. A comeback : But according to a news release issued last week, that will soon change since Caribou Coffee announced that it has signed several multi-unit development agreements to franchise more than 300 new locations in the United States, including several in Michigan. Have to wait and see: Chick-fil-A fans may soon get the chance to score the restaurant’s well-known chicken and sauce in Ann Arbor. |

2023 NFL draft analysis: The Lions aren’t scared, and didn’t draft scared either |
Analyzing the draft: It was an unconventional draft from the Detroit Lions, but they didn’t care. They think they’re ready to win right now, and believe they got two tent-post players they can build around for a generation. Guess who’s back in town?: Nearly a decade after they were part of one of the most fearsome rotations in baseball, Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander are returning to Detroit. Both aces -- now 38 and 40 years old, respectively -- are slated to pitch this week when the New York Mets visit the Tigers beginning today at 6:40 p.m. In college football: Here's what’s next for Michigan State after Payton Thorne and Keon Coleman entered the transfer portal. Michigan tight end Joel Honigford signed a deal with the Arizona Cardinals. The Detroit Lions and Washington Commanders signed Saginaw Valley State University standouts. |
