Morning Briefing

FRIDAY, JANUARY 12, 2024

In today's newsletter, we'll go over the snowfall forecast, why student loan payments are paused for some borrowers and an update on Sam LaPorta.

Snow is back, and so are winter activities

You've probably heard by now that Michigan is set for a big snowstorm this weekend (and if you haven't, don't worry, we'll have more on that below). With snow comes opportunity for the seasonal fun these past few months have been lacking.

A pair of special candlelit walks at Sleeping Bear Dunes highlight winter’s magic at the park and an Up North Sip & Ski tour can be an amazing wine country experience.

You might not think of river rafting much in the winter, but Northern Michigan has it if you're feeling extra adventurous.

Will the real Michigan Republican Party please stand up?

Seeing double: Two websites, two staffs, two leaders issuing edicts. For nearly a week there have been two Michigan Republican parties, and the schism doesn’t seem to have an end in sight.

Since a Jan. 6 meeting where a faction of GOP officials voted to remove MIGOP chair Kristina Karamo and her allies and appointed Malinda Pego as acting chair, Karamo and her supporters have insisted the meeting violated party bylaws, was wholly illegitimate and nothing has changed.

On the other side: Despite split Michigan House, Democrats say they’re still in control.

Snowfall forecast pretty confident now, heaviest near foot of snow, one strip iffy

Getting smacked: Waking up on Saturday morning, you can expect to see anywhere from 3"-13" of snow outside, depending on where you are in the state. Even after that, most of the western part of the state will receive another three to six inches by Saturday night.

Be aware: Severe blowing and drifting will occur Saturday, making blizzard conditions likely for some. In fact, a blizzard "bomb-out" could peak right over Lower Michigan and fuel severe 55 mph wind gusts.

Why student loan payments are paused for some borrowers right now

Student loan borrowers have been experiencing long wait times, abandoned phone calls, delays in processing applications and inaccurate billing statements since payments restarted Oc.t. 1, according to a recent report from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

This prompted the federal government to pause payments for 758,000 affected borrowers and withhold payments to three student loan servicers.

More in government: The Michigan Supreme Court heard two cases concerning whether businesses forced to close or restrict operations in the first months of the pandemic deserved to be compensated.

Surprise! Sam LaPorta runs routes after practice, ‘optimistic’ he’ll play for Lions

Just three days after hurting his knee, Sam LaPorta was back on the practice field going through blocking drills, running routes with Jared Goff and instilling even more hope the rookie tight end will play in a wild-card game on Sunday night against the Los Angeles Rams.

Another star player: Amon-Ra St. Brown, who was rocking a freshly-dyed, bright blue hair, didn’t back down when asked if he felt motivated to beat the Los Angeles Rams with starting quarterback Jared Goff on his mind.

For the Wolverines: Jim Harbaugh took a down-and-out program in 2020 and, three years later, turned it into college football's king. Here's how.
