Presidents Day means something more to this Michigan brewery |
Between the Ryesenhower Red Rye IPA and Oatbama Oatmeal Stout, Presidential Brewing Company in Portage has been serving up beers with presidential puns since 2019. Today, President's Day, is no different as the brewery holds its own version of Inauguration Day to celebrate its fifth year of business. Patrons can enjoy new releases like the State of the Union 2024 Belgian IPA and a flight of five different Sherbert Hoover flavors. The celebration will also feature a special food menu, Presidential Bingo, live music with Megan Rae and Paul Rogers and the reopening of the Electoral College Mug Club. |

From who’s on ballot to how to cast one, here’s what you need to know about this month’s election. What Trump said: Speaking on the state of the auto industry and not shying away from his recent legal battles, former President Donald J. Trump spoke to a large crowd Saturday, Feb. 17, in Waterford Township. He also encouraged attendees to vote for him in the primary and general election. Also in politics: The options for Michiganders to cast votes early and in person officially kicked off for the first time statewide Saturday, but not all Michiganders will have the same experience. |

Federal assistance now available to Michigan residents after August tornadoes. Here’s how to apply |
For eligible residents: Federal assistance is now available to residents in Eaton, Ingham, Ionia, Kent, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland and Wayne counties who suffered property damage between Aug. 24 and Aug. 26 due to tornadoes, severe storms and flooding. Welcome home: A 256-unit housing development, containing a mix of condominiums and townhomes that will predominantly be owner-occupied, is being pitched to the city of Kentwood. More housing: Another housing development coming to downtown Jackson is expected to break ground soon. Ohio-based company Pivotal is planning to break ground this spring on a three-story, 51-unit apartment building. |

Watch for this week’s Snow Moon, smallest full moon of the year |
Tiny: Reaching its peak at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24, the February full moon is actually a “micromoon” — the term for when the moon is full while also being at or nearly at its farthest point from Earth, according to the astronomy site EarthSky. Mark your calendar: If you missed the historic total solar eclipse of 2017, don’t worry — you’ll have a chance on April 8 to be wowed by another, and possibly even better, celestial spectacle. On land: The state of Michigan is exploring a new plan to resume dredging of the Platte River mouth at the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. |

Michigan State basketball outlasts Michigan for first season sweep since 2019 |
Big win: Michigan State’s women’s basketball team swept the season series against Michigan on Sunday for the first time since 2019. The Spartans survived a late Michigan push, holding on for a 70-66 victory at Crisler Center. Making the cut: Starting Monday, the Detroit Tigers have about five weeks to whittle down their 59-man camp to a 26-man Opening Day roster. Check out this ranking of all 59 Tigers on their chances of making 2024 Opening Day roster. Match up: The NHL has made it official: The Detroit Red Wings will face the Columbus Blue Jackets at Ohio Stadium next season on March 1, 2025, in a Stadium Series game. |

Lobotomies, murders and Elvis rumors: New exhibit recounts psychiatric hospital tales |
Sight to see: The newest exhibit at the Kalamazoo Valley Museum takes a look at Michigan’s longest-operating psychiatric hospital. From now through Jan. 19, 2025, visitors can check out the Kalamazoo State Hospital exhibit, which is included in the museum’s free admission. Buy, sell or trade: Sneaker heads, save the date. The Sneaker Nutz Shoe Convention is returning to Grand Rapids for its second year on May 18. There will be live DJs, live art creation, as well as food, games and raffles throughout the event. Show goes on: Despite the UP 200 dog sled race being cancelled for a second year in a row due to poor trail conditions, thousands of people still flocked to downtown Marquette Friday evening to celebrate the annual winter tradition. |
