Home values: Cuyahoga County residents who complained that their latest home-value assessments were too high should know by now whether they’re getting an adjustment – just in time for tax bills to start rolling out, Kaitlin Durbin reports. There were 20,367 homeowners who filed informal complaints with the county this year following the latest appraisal that sent home values soaring an average 32%. Of those, 14,001, or 69%, will see their values changed.

 

Landlords penalized: Thousands of landlords ignoring code violations in Cleveland could be getting a special gift from the city’s inspectors to start 2025: a $200 fine. The city’s Building and Housing department is preparing to use its new civil ticketing system, designed to financially punish property owners who break the rules, Sean McDonnell reports.

 

Replacing Vance: Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and Lt. Gov. Jon Husted recently visited Mar-a-Lago, the Florida residence of President-elect Donald Trump, fueling speculation that Ohio’s lieutenant governor might be nominated to the U.S. Senate, Laura Hancock reports. U.S. Sen. JD Vance is expected to resign from his seat to become vice president sometime after Jan. 1 and the job of nominating a replacement for Vance falls on DeWine.

Unemployment: For the second month in a row, Ohio’s unemployment rate remained at 4.3% after dropping from 4.5% in September. However, the state’s November unemployment rate is above the national average of 4.2%, which rose from 4.1% in October, Zachary Smith reports.

Road flooded: Cleveland Division of Water crews were called early Monday to repair a water main break that flooded a portion of Madison Avenue on the city’s far West Side. Cleveland firefighters used an inflatable raft to rescue a woman trapped on the roof of her car, Cory Shaffer reports.

 

 

Business and Health

Sports betting: Ohio’s sports-betting companies in October smashed the 2024 sports-betting record set in September with the start of the regular NFL season and the first full month of college football, Zachary Smith reports. Combined, the companies took in nearly $903 million of bets in October, according to data compiled from the Ohio Casino Control and Ohio Lottery commissions, an increase from $846 million in September.

 

Life expectancy: Americans lived slightly longer in 2023 as compared to 2022, according to a new mortality report from the U.S. Centers for Disease and Prevention, Julie Washington reports. Last year, life expectancy at birth was 78.4 years for the total U.S. population, an increase from 77.5 in 2022, the CDC report said.

Fatal shooting: A Cleveland man was fatally shot Sunday on the city’s East Side, Olivia Mitchell reports. Andre Williams, 37, was wounded in the 2600 block of East 71st Street, according to police and the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office.

 

 

Arts and Entertainment

MLK Day: The Cleveland Museum of Art will have free activities throughout the day on Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 20, inspired by the King Foundation’s 2025 theme, “Mission Possible: Protecting Freedom, Justice, and Democracy in the Spirit of Nonviolence," Paris Wolfe reports.
