Smartphone app could help detect early-onset dementia cause, study finds
| There are no immediate plans to make the app widely available, but it could help to advance research into the condition | A mobile app has the ability to detect a prominent cause of early-onset dementia in people who are at high risk of developing it, the Guardian reported. The research, published in JAMA Network Open, showed that cognitive tests performed by the app produce results with an accuracy similar to those of medical evaluations performed in clinics, and it could even be “more sensitive to the earliest stages of the condition than gold-standard neuropsychological evaluations that are usually performed in clinics.” The research team worked with U.S. software company Datacubed Health to develop the app, which records people’s speech as they engage with several cognitive tests ... | |

In-wall subwoofer review highlights a 'sleek, modern, and meticulously crafted' device
| The SVS 3000 wins on many levels, though fitting it may be a challenge for some | The SVS 3000 in-wall subwoofer system earned an "editor's choice" badge from HomeTheater Review. Described as "something that you can hide in the wall but still trust to put out monster levels of rumble and thunder," the SVS 3000 is not the cheapest on the market at $2,000, but there's plenty to justify the price. Pluses include its "exceptional" bass performance; seamless floorspace-saving integration; and configurability that allows for deployment as a single or dual subwoofer system, tailoring the bass output to suit the room size and acoustics. Low points? Its limited depth could affect the subwoofer's ability to pleasingly reproduce the lowest frequencies, and getting it fitted may be a challenge ... | |

Billie Eilish and Nicki Minaj call for a halt to 'predatory' music AI | Entertainers have joined forces in a campaign organized by the Artist Rights Alliance | Billie Eilish, Nicki Minaj, and other artists have expressed concern over the way artificial intelligence (AI) is impacting the music industry, the BBC reported. They’re among 200 artists calling for a halt to the "predatory" use of AI in the music industry. In an open letter also signed by Katy Perry and the estate of Frank Sinatra, the signatories claim that AI “will set in motion a race to the bottom" if nothing is done. They added: “We must protect against the predatory use of AI to steal artists' voices and likenesses,” and said they want tech companies to promise not to develop AI-powered music-generation tools "that undermine or replace the human artistry of songwriters and artists, or deny us fair compensation for our work" ...

Microsoft is working on an Xbox AI chatbot | The computer giant is investing heavily in AI, incorporating it into Windows with Copilot and backing ChatGPT creator OpenAI | Microsoft is testing an AI chatbot for Xbox that could carry out customer support services. "We are testing an Xbox Support Virtual Agent, an internal prototype of an animated character that can query Xbox Support topics with voice or text," the company told Cnet. It added that its animated chatbot would pull information from existing Xbox Support pages to answer to players’ queries. Another report suggested the chatbot could also process refunds for games. Microsoft hasn't revealed when it’s hoping to launch the Xbox chatbot, though as Cnet points out, the company is planning upgrades to its video game console and services soon, so an early version of it could conceivably appear then ...
