Neuralink conducts first wireless brain chip implant on a human, Elon Musk reveals
| The tech could help people with paralysis, but the main aim of the initial work is to evaluate the safety of the implant and the effectiveness of the surgical robot | On Monday, Neuralink owner and co-founder Elon Musk announced that his team has conducted its first chip implant in a human brain, adding that the volunteer is “recovering well.” Musk also said that the “initial results show promising neuron spike detection,” which is necessary for commands to travel from the brain to the body. The update comes four months after Neuralink put out its first call for human volunteers to test its experimental N1 computer interface. The first ambition is to get the technology to a point where it can help people with paralysis to control devices with their thoughts, with the ever-ambitious Musk even suggesting that it could one day equip humans with “superhuman cognition” ... | |

GAMING – AND LIFE by Giovanni Colantonio |
I have a problem, but it took seeing myself in a video game to face it
| ' Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is a cautionary tale for workaholics, reminding us that there's life outside of our jobs' | On January 4, I received an email I had both been anticipating and dreading for months. My copy of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, one of my most anticipated games of 2024, had dropped into my inbox. Usually, that moment would give me a jolt of energy. Why the future of the Quest depends on the Vision Pro
| 'Meta might not see Apple's Vision Pro as competition, but as a collaborator in pushing virtual reality technology into the mainstream' | Meta’s Quest 2 is the world’s most popular VR headset, and the latest Quest 3 is selling well and will quickly reach second place. However, the Vision Pro will arrive within days. While Apple’s VR headset outclasses Meta’s best in every way, the self-proclaimed “metaverse” company is reportedly optimistic about Apple entering the market. The timing of the Quest 3’s launch in October 2023 was perfect, riding the wave of excitement Apple created about mixed reality with the Vision Pro announcement four months earlier. Meta captured VR holiday sales before Apple’s headset was available and now benefits from increased media coverage and comparisons of the Vision Pro and Quest 3, often with a focus on the vast price difference ... | |
