Robin Khuda – who has catapulted himself into Australia’s richest elite – flew most of his AirTrunk company to Bali for his data centre empire’s “annual strategy meeting”, so his 350 workers could spend time face to face. As more Australian companies order staff back to the office, declaring an end to pandemic-era work from home arrangements, Mr Khuda booked a Balinese resort to “help propel us into our next phase of growth”. Many middle managers have told their top executives that working from home is an “entitlement” and are refusing to give it up. But artificial intelligence is going to change the middle management game dramatically, and those who don’t come into the office are now in grave danger of losing their jobs. As competition in the AI market heats up, Samsung will sack about 10 per cent of its global workforce, including Australian staff, as it reins in costs as high interest rates and subdued consumer spending hits the technology giant.
