In 2024 I finished a relatively small number of books compared to normal – just 14. To my credit, I read 4 of them twice. But I also started 18 other books that I did not finish – some I put aside for later, and others I put in the “not worth it” pile.
*Side note: Quitting a bad book (or movie) should be one of your goal superpowers. There’s no point in throwing good time after bad entertainment. And there’s no medals for finishing every book you start.
The 14 books I read: (recommended books are in bold)
1. $100 Million Leads – Alex Hormozi 2. $100 Million Offers – Alex Hormozi 3. The Algebra of Wealth – Scott Galloway 4. The Self Managing Company – Dan Sullivan 5. Vivid Vision – Cameron Herold 6. The Alchemist – Paulo Coelho 7. NO BS Time Management – Dan Kennedy 8. The Star Principle – Richard Koch 9. Cyrus the Great - Xenophon 10. Designed to Win – Nate Robert-Eze 11. Home and Away – the biography of hockey player Mats Sundin 12. How to Live An Extraordinary Life – Anthony Pompliano 13. Start to Scale – Verne Harnish 14. Outlive – Dr. Peter Attia
The most enjoyable – Mats Sundin (this was a brain candy book, solely for entertainment purposes, although I got one great lesson from it – shared below)
The most helpful to business – Start to Scale by Verne Harnish … we use a lot of his systems and I share a lot of his great exercises with my Mastermind members.
But of all 14, my #1 read was the last one: Outlive by Dr. Peter Attia.
This is a big book... possibly intimidating in size, science, and scope. But I skimmed over many of the heavy research sections and found a lot of simple advice.
Dr. Attia recommends aggressive health screening… he’s right in line with the recommendations I shared in my email yesterday.
It’s also a surprising book. Just when you think you’re done reading a book by a famous Silicon Valley doctor about what you should do with your health…
He hits you with a final chapter – that should be a movie – about his almost unbelievable anger problems and what he did to save his marriage and sanity.
In this final chapter Dr. Attia talks about emotional regulation and how you must not hit the panic button when stressed. IMO, this advice goes double for entrepreneurs.
Your job as an entrepreneur is to increase the “distress tolerance window”…
Because you’re going to be dealing daily with more compression stress than the average person.
The greater you can “open” this window… the better decisions you’ll make.
You must set higher personal standards in order to do this.
Including, but not limited to…
Saying no the nightly booze that takes the edge off immediately but decreases your tolerance window the next day (due to poor sleep)
Saying no to watching sports past your bedtime (which gives you immediate pleasure) but decreases your tolerance window the next day (due to lack of sleep)
Saying no to procrastination, eating too much, too much caffeine, gossiping, scrolling envy-inducing social media…
These things decrease your distress tolerance window and lead to you getting “snappy” with your family and team and impairing your personal performance.
So, how do you do this? - Set higher standards - Build effortless discipline systems - Create parameters for important personal decisions Which are all things we’ll be discussing on January 16th (next Thursday) in our special training… How to Achieve Ultimate Health, Energy, and Longevity in 2025.
