Read how this routine activity keeps me grounded in a busy season.
Hi folks, Last month, I talked about the beginning of summer and just how reinvigorating it can be. Everyone’s outside more, your social calendars are booked, and the days feel like they may never end. There's a sense of freedom during summer that's unique to this time of year, but the flip side is that summer can make you feel a little untethered. Longer days, vacations or having kids home from school can throw routines out the window. Sometimes that's a good thing. Routines can become ruts if we're not shaking things up once in a while. Still, for me to feel grounded, I need to keep some of my routines no matter what else is going on in my life. When I'm at home, my days are pretty predictable. I'm a creature of habit. I ride my fat tire bike, I work, I make music. When I'm traveling, as I am right now, there are a few things I need to feel like myself. It's probably no surprise that one of them is my morning coffee. |

For me, there’s nothing more relaxing than brewing a cup of coffee. Don’t get me wrong, I take my morning coffee very seriously because for me it’s an experience. This time of day is dedicated to slowing down, sipping coffee, and really grounding myself. It’s the ritual that kicks off my day. While there’s something to say about the positive mindfulness a repeated activity brings, I have experimented over the years with a variety of additions that not only elevate this routine of mine, but include added health benefits. Take a look below. Cinnamon: Nine times out of ten its natural sweetness is enough to make up for any lack of sugar. Plus, there’s the fact that it can offset any blood sugar spikes if you also end up adding sugar. Cinnamon’s earthy spiciness also blends seamlessly with the flavors of a robust brew. Real Cream: If vegetable oil based “creamer” is the epitome of lousy coffee, real cream is the pinnacle of coffee excellence. Because of the high fat content, choose organic at least and (even better) grass-fed to get the most benefit from those healthy fats. Collagen: I’ve written about this before, and the team will routinely offer up collagen coffee recipes on the blog. It’s become a go-to for me since the early days of Collagen Fuel mixes. Cacao: If you’ve got a soft spot for mocha, you could do worse than to add some raw cacao nibs or ultra-dark (>85%) chocolate to your daily cuppa. Cocoa beans are loaded with polyphenols, healthy fats, and a bucketload of flavor that pairs swimmingly with coffee beans. These are just a few of the tricks I’ve picked up over the years. The most important element though is using this time to truly relax. If you’ve got a summer full of family vacations and obligations, I encourage you to find a routine activity or two which truly allow you to unwind. Thanks for reading and be sure to let me know what your routine looks like this summer and what role it plays in your Primal life. |
