Researchers have developed a new method to produce complex natural products in amoebae. These polyketides include various antibiotics but also olivetolic acid, a precursor of the herbal active ingredient tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
By teaching a deep learning algorithm to identify the 'fingerprint' spectra of the molecular components of various bacteria, researchers could classify various bacteria in different media with accuracies of up to 98%.
