Announcements Two new Director's Messages were published last week by Dr. Langevin on nutrition and disease and the other one an the role of fascia. September 28, 2023 Traditionally, knowing how to procure and prepare safe, nutritious, and palatable food is learned at home. Unfortunately, this knowledge is becoming less and less passed down through the generations. Fast food, ready-made meals, and takeout have become so convenientand families rely on them so muchthat many children today, and even in previous generations, have grown up without learning how to cook. These factors are among the many fueling high rates of obesity and poor nutritional status in the United States, and associated chronic conditions linked to poor nutrition, like type 2 diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
September 27, 2023 I was so pleased to speak recently withThe New York Timesreporter, Danielle Friedman, for her recent story on fascia, The Tissue That Connects Our Muscles May Be a Key to Better Health. The role of fascia in how our bodies function and the impact on our health is a topic that hasnt gotten enough attention, but that is beginning to change, and its encouraging to have a thoughtful discussion on this subject. | Emmeline Edwards, Ph.D. October 3, 2023 I am thrilled to announce that the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) will administer three new high-impact research projects through theNational Institutes of Health (NIH) High-Risk, High-Reward Research (HRHR)program. The HRHR program supports highly innovative research that has the potential to lead to major advances in biomedical or behavioral science but might not fare well in the traditional peer review process. Funding for the awards comes from the NIH Common Fund and other NIH Office of the Director appropriations, such as to NIH Institutes and Centers, including NCCIH. The program includes different types of funding opportunities for trailblazing research by investigators at various stages of their careers. | ErinBurke Quinlan, Ph.D. September 29, 2023 As complementary and integrative health researchers, we want to find out how the interventions we study exert their positive influences on the brain and behavior. For the brain, we have the methods to make this possible; modern tools enable us to measure effects on brain circuit function at high levels of spatial and temporal resolution. However, we dont have comparably rigorous methods for precisely quantifying effects on behavior. And without them, our ability to link brain activity to behavioral changes is limited. | Wen Chen, Ph.D. September 29, 2023 One of the most frequent questions I hear about the expanding field of music and health research is How can I get involved? Today, I want to tell you about two new ways in which you can become involved in the National Institutes of Healths (NIHs) work on music and health: by attending a state-of-the-science workshop and by participating in activities of our four new research networks. | September 2023 Clinical Digest This issue of the digest summarizes current research about complementary health approaches for arthritis. Research to date suggests that some psychological and/or physical approaches such as acupuncture, massage therapy, and tai chi may be helpful for osteoarthritis (OA). Despite extensive research, its still uncertain whether glucosamine and chondroitin have a meaningful impact on symptoms or joint structure in OA. There is some evidence that supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids, gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), or the herb thunder god vine may help relieve some rheumatoid arthritis (RA) symptoms. |

Prez-Stable, M.D., director of the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD),designatedpeople with disabilities as a population with health disparities for research supported by the National Institutes of Health. The decision was made in consultation with Robert Otto Valdez, Ph.D., the director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, after careful consideration of a report delivered by an NIMHD advisory council, input from the disability community and a review of the science and evidence. Upcoming Events November 11, 2023; Bethesda, MD This investigator meeting, hosted by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), on November 11, 2023, will highlight recent advances in interoception research as relevant to the NIH Blueprint for Neuroscience Functional Neural Circuits of Interoception Initiative. Invited speakers will focus on basic and human subject research related to functional neural circuit analysis of interoception. The overall goal of this investigator meeting is to review the recent scientific advances on interoception research, facilitate the building of collaborations, and brainstorm future research. Registration is required. There will be no on-site registration. The deadline to register to attend in-person isOctober 20, 2023. You may register to view the talks (virtual option), but poster presentations will not be streamed. Learn more and register. | The International Congress on Integrative Medicine and Health will take place in Cleveland, Ohio on April 9 - 13, 2024 at the Hilton Cleveland Downtown. It will bring together leading figures from various fields to showcase recent scientific advancements in integrative medicine and health. Registration is now open. |
