Detroit Lions fans are taking creativity to the next level |
One thing that always impresses me about sports fans is their creativity in showing love to their favorite teams. Some Detroit Lions supporters are taking it up a notch by creating sculptures out of snow—and, in the case of one Michigan bakery, out of cake. Heather Tocco and her team at Home Bakery in Rochester recreated Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown performing his iconic handstand touchdown celebration out of cake, fondant and a bit of styrofoam for added support. Amon Ra St. Brown even announced a giveaway for two tickets to Detroit’s playoff game Saturday against the Washington Commanders after the cake created a buzz. Anyone who makes a purchase at Home Bakery between Jan. 13-16 will be automatically entered for a chance to win the tickets. |

Heather Tocco, owner of the Rochester-based Home Bakery, has gained widespread attention after she and her team created a life-size cake inspired by Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown’s touchdown celebration during the team’s Week 9 victory over the Green Bay Packers. Near-record cold becoming more likely with bitterly cold air to flow into Michigan |
Super cold is on the way: While Michigan's super cold period is still one week away, most of our model data is showing temperatures dipping below zero in the last third of January. During the period of Jan. 20 to Jan. 29, our long-term average low temperature and high temperature are the coldest of anytime in winter. Indications are we could be 20 to 25 degrees below normal sometime between Jan. 20 and Jan. 23. This means we won’t just be our normal Michigan cold. We will be North Dakota cold. Staying safe: Officials are urging caution after four separate incidents of snowmobiles falling through ice on Michigan’s largest inland lake. Michigan State Police in Wakefield say there 40-inch-high ice heave running east to west across Lake Gogebic, which is about two miles south of Ontonagon County Park. In case you missed it: Mountain bikers could be barred from two trails in the Upper Peninsula used by horseback riders, and 18 state parks and recreation areas could see new snowmobiling restrictions under separate proposals from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. |

Trump selects Detroit pastor for inauguration prayer |
In politics: A Detroit pastor has been chosen to deliver a prayer during President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration ceremony. Rev. Lorenzo Sewell, a Detroit native and leader of 180 Church in the city, will be one of four faith leaders to deliver a benediction prayer during Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20 in Washington, D.C. Incoming senior Trump administration officials have begun questioning career civil servants who work on the White House National Security Council about who they voted for in the 2024 election, their political contributions and whether they have made social media posts that could be considered incriminating by President-elect Donald Trump’s team, according to a U.S. official familiar with the matter. Mum's the word: Pete Buttigieg only has only six more days serving as the U.S. Secretary of Transportation. He spent one of his last days discussing his last four years in the Biden administration with University of Michigan students. He deflected questions about potential 2026 Michigan gubernatorial or 2028 presidential prospects during his talk with students. |

Where the DNR stocked 591,000 fish across Michigan |
In the water: Seven species of fish were stocked at 78 locations across Michigan this past fall, bringing the year’s stocking total to 9.7 million fish. While most fish are stocked in the spring, and some in the summer, the final stocking round of 2024 included 590,504 fish during the fall, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Find the locations, dates, species and numbers of each fall fish stocking here. Well testing: The state is launching a contamination probe in Kalamazoo County after moderate levels of toxic PFAS chemicals were found in the drinking water at a wholesale plant grower which houses migrant laborers. In Washtenaw County: The recently completed construction of a new Gallup Park bridge has required Ann Arbor to pay special attention to mussels living in the Huron River. The city has put $79,000 toward efforts to relocate and monitor hundreds of mussels since the start of the project in 2023, counting another $16,000 City Council approved Jan. 6. |

Logging truck’s worth of wood will make 60-foot bonfires for U.P. ski jumping tourney |
An entire logging truck-worth of wood will be used to make the bonfires for the 138th annual Ishpeming Ski Jumping Tournament scheduled for Friday and Sunday, Jan. 17-19, WLUC reports. The Ishpeming Lions Club is already preparing the fires, which include a birch bark core and logs taller than full-grown adults. The flames will be about 60-feet high. Check them out: Tahquamenon Falls State Park is undergoing major upgrades at both the Upper and Lower Falls. The park itself is still open for visitors, but the campgrounds are closed until mid-summer 2025. During construction, the park is not grooming its cross-country ski trails. Here are two Up North ski trails to try instead. After dark adventure: See Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore from a new perspective on this winter night hike. Rangers are lighting the one mile hike to the Dune Climb with candlelit luminaries to set the path aglow for night hikers. There will be two chances to catch this free hiking event, 6-7:30 p.m. Saturdays Feb. 8 and Feb. 15. |

Alcohol increases your cancer risk. Here’s what to know |
In health: About 90% of U.S. adults are aware that radiation and tobacco are linked to increased cancer risk, yet only 45% know alcohol is associated with the disease. U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy recently released a 2025 advisory in which he called the public’s attention to the dangers of alcohol consumption as it relates to mouth, throat, esophagus, voice box, breast, liver, and colorectal cancer. Alcohol is the third-leading preventable cause of cancer in the United States, after tobacco and obesity, the Surgeon General’s office said. Cancer risk increases as alcohol consumption increases but can be a factor in people who consume as little as one or fewer drinks per day. Alcohol is attributed to about 100,000 cases of cancer and 20,000 cancer deaths annually, Murthy said. New limitations: Corewell Health was the latest health system to enact tighter visitor restrictions in response to a high number of pediatric admissions and an increase in respiratory illnesses throughout Michigan. Corewell’s announcement Friday came a day after Detroit Medical Center strengthened its visitor policy. |
