| | PODCAST | Two Decades of Progress Against HIV
| Twenty years ago, the United States started a program to treat HIV and AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa and around the world. Called the “President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief,” or PEPFAR, the initiative has helped save tens of millions of lives and is still going today. “As a nation of great riches and opportunities, we have a moral responsibility to not let people die from a disease that is treatable merely because of where they were born and where they live,” says Anthony Fauci, the principal architect of PEPFAR who designed the program while under instructions to keep it almost entirely secret. Fauci is now best known for helping the country handle the COVID-19 crisis, but he’s been working to battle infectious disease around the world for decades. In today’s talk from Aspen Ideas: Health, he’s joined by then-Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, who rallied support in Congress and led the passage of PEPFAR legislation. CNN Medical Correspondent Elizabeth Cohen interviews them about how they got the monumental program off the ground and what we’ve learned from it two decades later. 🎧 Listen
