In a televised address, Netanyahu pledged to continue pursuing coalition talks, saying that new election would be unnecessary and costly. "A lot can be done in 48 hours," he said. "The voters' wishes can be respected, a strong right-wing government can be formed.

A second national election in the same year - unprecedented for Israel - could pose new political risks for Netanyahu, but it would also preempt President Reuven Rivlin from granting another lawmaker the coalition-forming task once Netanyahu's Wednesday deadline expires.
