From host Joel McHale’shilarious opening monologue, to honors for Still Processing and other amazing podcasts, a mini X-Files reunion with Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny, a little 5-word tune from Solange, and so much more, the 21st Annual Webbys was one for the books, and a fitting celebration of the people and organizations that make the Internet such an awesome place. Joel McHale's Opener
Actor/Comedian Joel McHale opened the show with a look back to the 1st Annual Webbys in 1997... and an angry nod toward some of what defined this past year on the Internet. (Here's looking at you, fake news.)
The Webbys partnered with YouTube to highlight the work of Franchesca Ramsey, Amani Al-Khatahtbeh, and Humza Arshad as part of the YouTube Creators for Change program, a global initiative amplifying the voices of creators who are tackling social issues with their channels.
National Co-Chairs Linda Sarsour, Carmen Perez, and Bob Bland accepted the Webby for Social Movement of the Year for The Women's March, which proved that the Internet can be a powerful catalyst for global social change and action.
Webby Artist of the Year Solange (with artist Kara Walker, who presented the award) dazzled the audience as she accepted her Webby—a celebration of her music and online presence. Don't miss her melodic 5-Word Speech.
Tracey Jaquith, Brewster Kahle, and Alexis Rossi accepted a Lifetime Achievement Award for Internet Archive, which has been compiling the world's knowledge and cataloging Internet history since 1996. Pretty smart, huh?
BuzzFeed Editor-in-Chief Ben Smith took the stage to accept the Webby for Best News App on behalf of BuzzFeed. Whether you read the site for the quizzes or for the journalism, rest assured you won't find any #fakenews here.
