Urgent. Check NOW if you can claim four tax rebates worth £100s or even £1,000s You've only till 5 April (TOMORROW) to max claims for marriage tax allowance, PPI tax & more With marriage tax allowance, tax on PPI claims, overpaid income tax and uniform tax rebates, you can only backdate reclaims for four tax years (as well as claiming for the current year). So with the new tax year starting on Thursday, you'll LOSE the ability to backdate claims as far as the 2018/19 tax year (so 6 Apr 2018 to 5 Apr 2019). Sort it NOW, as tomorrow (Wed 5 Apr) is your absolute last chance... Apply for marriage tax allowance now or lose up to £238. Around 2.1 million couples eligible for marriage tax allowance don't claim it. To be eligible you must be married or in a civil partnership, and one must be a non-income-taxpayer, the other a basic 20% taxpayer. If so, the non-taxpayer can transfer some of their tax-free allowance to their spouse. If you were eligible for the whole time, this is backdateable by four years, so it's worth a total of £1,242.But from Thu 6 Apr, you can't claim for the 2018/19 year, worth up to £238. Full help, pros & cons in our Marriage tax guide, but if it's worth it for you, it's quick and simple to do. Nick emailed: "My wife transferred her allowance to me as she is self-employed and doesn't earn enough to pay tax. We've just received a cheque for £948.58. Cannot thank you enough for all your tips in these difficult times." Did you have a PPI payout? You're likely due tax back, but go quick. August 2019 was the final deadline for PPI claims through the ombudsman - it was a hugely busy time. And if you had a payout between 6 Apr 2018 and 5 Apr 2019, the deadline's approaching to reclaim that tax. Martin's Reclaim PPI tax blog takes you through it, and it can be worth £100s or even £1,000s, as Emma's email to Martin shows: "I've wanted to thank you for ages. After watching your programme in 2019, I claimed a PPI refund and got £17,000 back. Today I claimed the tax I paid back... another £1,400." Is your tax code wrong? Millions may be - check now. A tax code is a series of letters and numbers - for example, 1257L - which tells your employer/pension provider what tax to deduct. It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY, not that of HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) or your employer, to check if it's wrong, and if it is (millions often are each year), it can mean you're overpaying and are due cash back. You've until Wed 5 Apr to do it for the 2018/19 year. Full help's in our Free Tax Code Calc guide, which James read, before emailing: "Having read your info about checking tax codes, we spoke with a couple of very nice people at HMRC. End result, a £4,000 tax rebate between the two of us. Well worth the time, thank you for bringing it to our attention." Wear a recognisable uniform to work? Claim a uniform tax rebate. Even if it's just a branded T-shirt, if you wash or repair it yourself, you can likely claim a tax rebate. The minimum allowance is £60/yr (so it's worth £12/yr for a basic 20% taxpayer, £24/yr for a higher 40% payer). As you can backdate four years, go quick or you'll lose 2018/19. Full help's in our Uniform tax rebate guide. It worked for Rita: "Thanks to your email, I claimed £60 tax relief backdated for five years for work uniform expenses. This was a very simple task to do, thank you." PS: Use or lose your £20,000 2022/23 ISA allowance. They're not right for everyone, but if you need tax-free ISA savings, you need to go now. April's hideous 17% mobile bill hikes have now kicked in, so... Grab 15GB data for just '£5/mth' - or supersize to 100GB for '£9/mth' - simply by switching Sim We've warned that mobile bills were facing double-digit percentage hikes this month - and if you're in contract, there's little you can do to avoid 'em. But if you're one of the NINE MILLION out of contract, check if you're massively overpaying. You may even be forking out for the old 'pay off your handset' contract rates, despite having already paid for the phone. If you're not in need of a new handset, switching to a new Sim-only deal can save £100s (the Sim is the chip in your phone that dictates your data, calls & texts allowance). Our Cheap Sim comparison has all the deals, here's a taster...
- You can keep your number. Text 'PAC' to 65075 then give the code you're sent to your new provider, who'll transfer it. - Unlock your phone for free. If you're out of contract, your network must let you do this at no cost. See Mobile unlocking. - Don't want to switch? Haggle. Mobile firms are among the easiest to haggle with. THIS WEEK'S POLL Have you got an electric car? The push towards electric vehicles (EVs) is growing - with about 700,000 already on the road, and the sale of new petrol and diesel cars to be banned by the end of 2030, more people will be considering going electric. Have you taken the plunge and bought an EV, or do you plan to in the future? Let us know in this week's poll. Most MoneySavers still carry wallets/purses rather than relying on a digital wallet. More than 10,000 people voted in last week's poll on whether you've ditched a physical wallet for a digital one - the answer was a resounding 'no', with 85% still holding a wallet. See full poll results. |
MONEY MORAL DILEMMA Should I share the cash I get selling the hand-me-downs my friend gave me? My friend gave me a big bag of clothes her daughter had outgrown. My daughter wore and loved them all, and has now outgrown them herself. My friend said she didn't want them back, so I'm planning on selling them. But should I give her half of the profits? She's not short of cash and doesn't use second-hand selling sites, so wouldn't see I was selling them. GETTING RID OF UNWANTED PRESENTS - TO REGIFT OR NOT TO REGIFT? That's all for this week, but before we go... our Forumites are discussing rewrapping unwanted gifts and pawning them off to someone else. One Forumite in particular is sick of getting body lotion sets, and removes items they don't use to pass them on. Another once rumbled a regifting boss, who gave them a cookbook... that had an inscription from the previous gifter. One family has even made a competition out of regifting, seeing how often the same present can be circulated around them before being shipped off to an unsuspecting friend. Tell us your thoughts on regifting in our To regift or not to regift forum thread. We hope you save some money, |
