Where NOLA Eats

Happy Thursday, New Orleans food fans! This week, we learned about a brewery and barbecue restaurant coming to a spot near the Superdome.  A talented chef is making a St. Charles Avenue hotel and restaurant into a destination for great meals that can feel like a mini-vacation. Down the bayou, a fourth-generation oyster business is harvesting something new, while across the lake, a barbecue place gets back to basics. And in the home kitchen, Liz Faul's perfect roast chicken, caprese salad and pesto orzo are bursting with summer flavor.

1. Brew dat.

The brewery and restaurant Brewery Saint X and counter-service spot Devil Moon BBQ are taking shape in shared space around the corner from the Superdome. It's sure to be a welcome destination for pre-gaming as the Saints season ramps up. For now, check out their pop-up plans.

2. Avenue adventure?

The Chloe is a restaurant, pool and inn all tucked around a grand old St. Charles Avenue mansion. These days, creative cuisine from chef Todd Pulsinelli — shrimp étouffée dumplings, anyone? — can make a meal there feel like a much-needed staycation.

3. Wait! There's more.

Old Mandeville's Pyre Barbecue is fired up about its back-to-basics concept and expansion.  A new way of cultivating oysters offers promise for a venerable fishing family in Leeville. The craft beer destination Avenue Pub has new owners, and sweet ideas are taking shape at Pinkberry yogurt.

4. Simple pleasures.

Fragrant with basil, Liz Faul's favorite summer meal is a celebration of the waning season. Check out her recipes for caprese salad, pasta with pesto and a flawless roast chicken.

That's it for the food newsletter, but in New Orleans the food news never stops. For more, visit us at NOLA.com. Thanks for reading, and have a great weekend!

The Must Read

Ian McNulty: An Uptown mansion for a one-meal staycation, etouffee dumplings, porch drinks

You don’t forget a dish like shrimp étouffée dumplings. I don’t anyway. I first tried them at Restaurant August, in one of the finely appointed dining rooms, under a chandelier, when Todd Pulsinelli was chef. Read more

What to cook

For the last taste of summer, savor basil pesto orzo with a roast chicken and caprese salad

School has started, and I have already begun to see pumpkin-spiced food at the grocery store. Before I give in to the flavors of fall, I decided to hold onto summer a little bit longer by making a fresh basil pesto. Read more
