| Friend, I’ll be honest. The past month has been pretty stressful. We’re all trying to stay safe and healthy, and there is a lot of information to take in. At KQED, we know how crucial it is to get you and your neighbors the high-quality, fact-based news you need. With that in mind, we’re changing up our radio pledge drive so that we can decrease interruptions and increase the content you rely on. Cutting our radio pledge drive from 14 to 2 days is a big deal for us. We know it might be hard to raise the funds we need without our usual amount of time promoting the drive. But I know we can pull it off with your help. Support our vital work—and our shortened drive—now! On a recent episode of The Bay we talked to KQED staff who are keeping us on the air right now. News media is considered an essential business, so we still have a very small crew working out of our studio in San Francisco. This fantastic core team is there to ensure you can tune-in and allow most of us to continue broadcasting—from home. Working from home means our daily routines have taken on new twists. We’ve gotten pretty darn creative about how to provide sound dampening with the use of pillows, blankets and closets; wrestled with uncooperative internet connections; learned to stay in touch via text and video chat; discovered that sometimes polar bear pajamas are the new business casual and, most importantly, continued to share our communities’ stories with you—even if it’s from an impromptu office in the laundry room. We’re also trying to be creative with our pledge model right now so you don’t miss any important updates. Shrinking our drive by 80% is fantastic news, but we still need to raise the same funds so that we can stay on the air. That’s where you come in. We need you to show us that we can raise just as much money (or more!) with limited on-air interruptions. Our world has changed profoundly, but KQED is still here for you. Please give what you can, if you can, and thank you so much for your support of public media. Stay safe and healthy out there! | | Devin Katayama Host, The Bay (now brought to you from within my blanket fort.) |
