Beginner Tip: Get a Kit! The fly tying world can seem complicated and daunting to anyone just starting out. If you are ready to make the leap, consider investing in a fly tying kit. There are two ways to get a kit: buy a ready-made kit, or assemble your own. Orvis, for example, makes a kit that's on sale right now for under $150 and contains all the tools and materials you'll need. Or i you have access to a local fly shop, they will always be willing to help you put together your own kit and one that may be more suitable to local waters. Begin by mastering only a small handful of patterns (Woolly Bugger, Hare’s Ear, and Elk Hair Caddis), as these will teach you techniques that can apply to lots of different patterns. And don't forget the internet. Tim Flagler (Tight Lines Fly Fishing) provides some of the finest instructional videos. In fact his Woolly Bugger video on MidCurrent is what got me hooked! - Scott Hetzer is the owner of Eclipse Fly Co. |
