As the majority of high schools continue to emphasize memorization and performance on standardized tests, funding for the development of soft skills is often neglected. Many traditional-age students begin college without a clear sense of why creativity is important, or even what it is. However, chief human-resources and chief strategy officers surveyed by the World Economic Forum ranked creativity among the top ten most in-demand skills. The Chronicle’s latest issue brief, “The Creativity Challenge,” serves as a primer on why creativity is important, offers strategies for how students can develop it, and explores why faculty should encourage creativity in every discipline and course. Despite common misconceptions, creativity is a skill that can be cultivated through learning transferable processes and disciplinary training.
