The MacMost Newsletter: Issue #607
August 20, 2020
I'm exited to announce a new online course Keynote: Building Presentations On Your Mac. This is a completely new course on Keynote where each lesson builds on the previous one to quickly teach you how to make and present Keynote presentations using your Mac.

The course starts with the basics of building a presentation in Keynote and then goes into detail about using media, transitions, animation and presenting. It is a complete course with 60 lessons and more than 3 hours of video to teach you everything you need to know to use Keynote to give presentations and create slideshow content. The course is for version 10.1 of Keynote for Mac or newer.

Here is a special coupon that will get you 40% off the price of the course, from now until August 28. So, as an example, in the U.S. that would be $23.97 instead of $39.95. Click on this link or use the code keynote741. Make sure the coupon code is applied before checking out. You can use this link to view the table of contents and even preview some of the videos.

Just like with all of the courses at my site, you can take as long as you like to start the course and go through the videos. You can also go back to review the videos as often as you like.

You can use the brush selection tool in Affinity Photo to cut out a subject in a photo. With the subject on a separate layer, you can apply adjustments, filters and effects to just the subject or the background. You can also copy and paste the subject onto another background image.

The cell format in Numbers determines how the value in the cell is displayed. You can set the number of decimal places, add thousands separators, control how negative numbers are displayed and more. You can also format dates and durations. With custom cell formats you can take complete control and even change the format based on the value of the cell.

Starting with macOS Catalina 10.15.4 you can use Accessibility to control your cursor with your head, and even click and drag with facial expressions. Even if you don't need this functionality, it can be useful as a temporary way to control your Mac is some situations, or just a way to give your hands a rest.

If you need the headings in your document to be automatically numbered, you can adapt the numbered lists styles and the ability to continue from the previous number to accomplish this. The result isn't ideal, but it can be a life-saver in long documents with many headings as the numbers will change automatically as you add and remove headings.

It seems to be impossible to search for files in the Mac Finder in two or more separate locations at the same time. But you can do it ina tricky way by editing the criteria of a Saved Search. While not quick, this does give you the ability and you can modify it later to search in the same locations for different things.

You probably know that you can use Command+Space and then type the first few letters of an app's name, then Return to launch it when it appears as the top hit. But you can also use the initials of multi-word app names. So qp for QuickTime Player, fm for Find My and mw for Microsoft Word. It even works with gb for GarageBand, recognizing the capital B in the name.
I'm often asked about the software and gadgets I use to produce the MacMost videos and in my work as a developer. So I've compiled a list of the products I use and recommend. Check it out. -- Gary
