New map shows where 4+ inches could fall in Wednesday’s snowstorm |
While the forecasts for the Wednesday-Thursday snowstorm are telling us we should be prepared for 4 inches of snow as a baseline, here’s why you should plan for more. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a map Tuesday showing which areas across the Lower Peninsula have the highest percentage of getting at least 4 inches of snow or more. And those percentages are coming in high. The NWS meteorologists in Grand Rapids say storm conditions are expected to kick in between noon and 3 p.m. Wednesday. The peak time for heavy snowfall and gusty winds will be 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Storm conditions are expected to end between 4 and 7 a.m. on Thursday. With the storm start time getting closer the winter storm watch has been re-defined for most of Lower Michigan. It’s a winter weather advisory for 4 inches to 6 inches of snow for most of the southern two-thirds of Lower Michigan. The far southeast corner, including Ann Arbor, Detroit and Monroe, is expected to get some freezing rain. This will cut the measurable snow to 2 inches to four inches in far southeast Michigan. |

Trump pushes ‘Back to plastic’ for straws and other single-use items |
Plastic over paper: President Donald Trump is moving to reverse a federal push away from plastic straws, declaring that paper straws “don’t work” and don’t last very long. The move by Trump — who has long railed against paper straws, and whose 2019 reelection campaign sold Trump-branded reusable plastic straws for $15 per pack of 10 — targets a Biden administration policy to phase out federal purchases of single-use plastics, including straws, by 2027, and from all federal operations by 2035. Sick birds: An outbreak of avian influenza, known as bird flu, is leading to reports of wild birds dying off in southern Michigan, including in and around Ann Arbor, according to state wildlife pathologist Julie Melotti. Tracking the moose: Figuring out why Michigan’s moose population has hit a wall instead of expanding like wildlife scientists believe it should have in the last 40 years is at the crux of a new study that plans to fit tracking collars onto 60 of the huge animals in the next two years. |

Michigan House votes to withhold funds from cities, universities not cooperating with ICE |
In politics: The Michigan House will withhold earmarks, which sometimes total millions of dollars, from local governments and universities that don’t fully cooperate with federal immigration enforcement authorities. The resolution passed Tuesday, Feb. 11, is intended to dissuade Michigan communities and universities from limiting their partnership with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement amid President Donald Trump’s ongoing mass deportation efforts. Michigan leaders are presenting two main proposals to fix the state’s long-term road funding system. House Speaker Matt Hall, R-Richland Township, introduced his plan in late 2024 and provided further details in mid-January to reroute $3.14 billion to roads. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer followed suit, announcing a plan of her own Monday, Feb. 10, to find $3 billion and fulfill her 2018 campaign promise to “Fix the Damn Roads.” Red, White, and Blueland?: As President Trump continues to float the idea of acquiring Greenland from Denmark, one lawmaker is hoping to provide Congressional approval for the move. Rep. Earl “Buddy” Carter (R-Ga.) introduced a bill Tuesday that would not only approve of Trump’s plan to acquire the nation, but to rename it as well. |

Grocery stores are limiting how many eggs you can buy as prices continue to soar |
Slim pickings: Trader Joe’s and other grocers are limiting the number of eggs customers can buy across the U.S., citing limited supply caused by the ongoing bird flu outbreak. Photos of in-store notices about eggs purchase limits at retailers nationwide have swirled around online in recent weeks. In addition to Trader Joe’s, consumers and several local media outlets have also reported varying limits seen at stores like Costco, Whole Foods, Kroger and Aldi locations. Be aware: Several different flavors and sizes of tuna produced by California-based Tri-Union Seafoods have been recalled because of possible botulism contamination. The recall was announced by the Food and Drug Administration Monday which says no illnesses associated with the recalled products have been reported. In case you missed it: The Food and Drug Administration recently shared more information about a voluntary recall last month involving more than two million cases of doughnuts and other baked goods sold under various brand names, including Dunkin. The entire list of recalled products can be found here. |

Tom Izzo denied Big Ten wins record after Michigan State falls to Indiana |
History will have to wait: The stage was set for Tom Izzo to take over sole possession of the Big Ten wins record but Michigan State’s couldn’t deliver the milestone while losing 71-67 to Indiana on Tuesday night at the Breslin Center. The combination of a miserable offensive night and getting abused in the paint on the other end of the floor by the Hoosiers’ size led to the first home loss of the season for the Spartans. On the court: Michigan finished strong against the two-time defending Big Ten champs, sending a message that this year’s title might go through Ann Arbor. Not long after a blowout loss to Purdue, the Wolverines got their revenge at Crisler Center on Tuesday night. Braden Smith’s buzzer-beating 3 missed and Michigan improved to 12-0 at home. The first shift of the 2025 season begins Wednesday morning as 31 pitchers and six catchers officially clock in for work at TigerTown to open spring training. Wednesday’s first workout won’t shape any roster decisions or tilt the competition in any direction. The pitchers are merely taking their first steps into a long spring that will determine who makes the cut. |
