Expanding its territory: After picking up the contract to collect curbside trash and recycling in Gentilly, Lakeview and downriver neighborhoods, IV Waste is poised to take over garbage collection duties in Mid-City, Uptown and other upriver neighborhoods. Just how big a piece of the city's trash-collection pie would that give Sidney Torres' company? And is the company growing too fast? Ben Myers has the story. Investigating the investigation: On his last day on the job, former New Orleans Police Department superintendent Shaun Ferguson returned Officer Jeffrey Vappie to Mayor LaToya Cantrell's executive security detail, despite an ongoing internal probe and without consulting Vappie's direct supervisor, who opposed the move. This is one of several revelations to emerge from a hearing that has the city defending its handling of the investigation into Vappie's conduct while he was on the mayor's security detail. Missy Wilkinson has this report. Holding back the surge: Local, state and parish officials gathered near Bayou Barataria in Jean Lafitte Tuesday for the start of the $14 million Lower Lafitte Basin Tidal Surge Project, which aims to protect the flood-prone Jefferson Parish community from floodwaters. Marie Fazio has the details. Thanks for starting your day with Morning Headlines. See the latest news, sports and entertainment coverage at nola.com. Chad |
