BY ANNETTE SISCO | STAFF WRITER Happy Thursday, New Orleans food fans! This week, we track the latest expansion of Pizza Domenica, now with three locations around town. A popular king cake block party returns, this year with live music and vaccinations on offer. Authentic Chinese flavors bubble up at a Fat City kitchen, while chefs team up for a James Beard dinner. And check out Episode 1 of "This or That," where Ian McNulty talks about seafood gumbo vs. the chicken and sausage kind. Let's dig in... 1. A bigger slice of the pie? The Pizza Domenica brand grew out of a bustling half-price pizza happy hour at Domenica restaurant in the Roosevelt Hotel. Now it's spun off its third site, this one in Lakeview, opening this week. Happy hour is still here, as well as some elements from the original Domenica — bringing the concept full circle. Pizza fan Ian McNulty has the tale. 2. King cake kickoff. Usually the first day of Carnival, Jan. 6, the Bywater Bakery's king cake kickoff party was delayed a month by the omicron surge. It's happening this Sunday, though, with a lineup of local musicians and, of course, plenty of king cake. The event doubles as a fundraiser for the New Orleans Musicians' Assistance Foundation Makin’ Groceries. Find out more about the music, and the pastries, here. 3. Wait! There's more. Hot pots and dumplings bring unfiltered Chinese cooking to YuYan Kitchen in Metairie. A New Orleans sake brewery joins a small but swiftly growing niche in the world of beverages. A chef collaboration brings Cafe Reconcile to Vyoone's for a James Beard dinner. And don't miss Ian McNulty talking gumbo in the first episode of our new video series, "This or That"! 4. It's frying time again... Where do you find the best seafood platters in town? We could debate this topic all day on the Where NOLA Eats Facebook page. Chime in here. 5. Gotta break some eggs! Loads of vegetables, lean proteins and a crispy griddled edge: What's not to like? Our recipe for chicken and spinach frittata makes a quick and healthy weeknight supper. That's it for the food newsletter, but in New Orleans the food news never stops. For more, visit us at NOLA.com. Thanks for reading, and have a great weekend! --AS P.S.
