Good morning, Welcome to a new week and Monday's newsletter from The Scotsman. We have to start with the latest coronavirus news. The number of people who tested positive for Covid-19 is at the highest level since the pandemic began in early 2020. A record high number of Covid cases were recorded in Scotland yesterday, with 7,113 new cases reported in the latest Scottish Government figures. It is the third time in a week the record for new infections has been broken, as the Scottish Government warned the situation is “fragile” and said further restrictions could not be ruled out. Thankfully, we are not seeing a corresponding rise in deaths. There have been no new deaths of people who have tested positive, however, register offices are generally closed at weekends. Overall, 52 people were in intensive care and 507 people were in hospital on Sunday with recently confirmed Covid. For context, at the peak of the outbreak in spring 2020 there were more than 1,500 virus patients in hospital, including over 200 in intensive care wards. First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has revealed she is now self-isolating after coming into contact with a positive Covid case. | |
