| Pope Francis defrocked McCarrick, 90, last year after a Vatican investigation confirmed decades of allegations that he had sexually molested adults as well as children. A two-year Vatican investigation published Tuesday found that a series of bishops, cardinals and popes downplayed or dismissed reports of abuse by McCarrick. The report largely spares Francis, who it says merely continued his predecessors' naive handling of McCarrick until a former altar boy alleged abuse in 2017. |
