The discussions, revealed by Justice Department officials, could fuel new congressional calls for the appointment of a special counsel to investigate Russia’s alleged role in the 2016 presidential election. As attorney general, Jeff Sessions oversees Justice and the FBI, which have been leading investigations into Russian meddling and any links to Trump’s associates. “I did not have communications with the Russians,” Sessions said at his January confirmation hearing, when asked what he would do if he learned of evidence anyone in the campaign had communicated with the Russian government during the 2016 race. A spokeswoman for Sessions said there was “absolutely nothing misleading” about the answer and said he met with the Russian envoy as a senator and a member of the Armed Services Committee rather than as a top foreign policy adviser to the Trump campaign. |
