Supreme Court blocks strict COVID-19 restrictions on some New York houses of worship

The court's new, more conservative majority ruled 5-4 that Gov. Andrew Cuomo's limits on some houses of worship in hard-hit regions of the state violated the First Amendment's Free Exercise Clause. Chief Justice John Roberts and the three liberal justices dissented from the ruling by the high court’s majority that included new Associate Justice Amy Coney Barrett.
