| | | | Memorial Sloan Kettering's Integrative Medicine Service has been awarded a $3.3 million grant from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). This is the largest grant designated for oncology music therapy PCORI has ever awarded. The funding will help to launch a clinical trial aimed at comparing the effectiveness of music therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for the treatment of anxiety among people treated for cancer.
This clinical trial, MELODY, will be led by a team of researchers here at MSK, as well as at the Miami Cancer Institute in Florida.
"The COVID-19 pandemic has led to higher rates of stress and anxiety among people who have been treated for cancer," says Dr. Jun Mao, chief of the Integrative Medicine Service and co-lead investigator for this new study. "The MELODY trial will compare the effectiveness of virtual music therapy with virtual CBT sessions to address anxiety, a chronic concern among cancer survivors. I look forward to working with my co-investigators Dr. Kevin Liou and Dr. Kelly Trevino as well as our music therapy team and the staff of Miami Cancer Institute."
