Users of EKOenergy-labelled energy can use our internationally recognised logo in their communication. We are delighted that a growing number of energy consumers are proudly using this opportunity. In recent weeks we have seen our logo on the bottles of Olvi's Sandels beer, on the social media channels of the vegan shoe brand Vesicapiscis, on the websites of Ferrari BK, Dellas, and PixartPrinting, in the newest presentation video of Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority HSY and in many other places and products! Thanks to all. Your example is inspiring others. In other words: by communicating about your green power purchase, you are increasing the positive impact of your purchase.
2. Renewable energy from Tierra del Fuego to Alaska
We were a proud partner of the Corporate Energy Series (CES) Americas conference, which took place in Miami on 19 and 20 November. The conference brought together stakeholders from the emerging Latin American renewable energy markets and the dynamic Northern American market. Merve Güngör from EKOenergy spoke in the sessions on "Reaching 100% Renewable Energy Supply and Beyond" and "Renewable Energy Certificates". These talks focused on greening the supply chain and on moving towards action. In almost all countries it is possible to take concrete steps in the direction of 100% renewable energy. Let's act now! Thanks a lot to Green Power Global for involving us in this event. We are looking forward to the next editions.
”Consumers have more power than they think and with their demand, they can give the right signal to the market and push legislation into existence. Reliable tracking is one of EKOenergy’s criteria and this is a prerequisite for corporates when communicating about their renewable energy use" Merve Güngör, EKOenergy, in an interview with Corporate Energy Series Americas
3. Climate Fund projects in Nepal
For each MWh of EKOenergy-labelled energy sold, a minimum of 0.10 € goes to EKOenergy’s Climate Fund. The Fund finances renewable energy projects aimed at alleviating energy poverty in developing countries. Here is some latest news from three Nepalese projects that we are currently financing: - The NGO Renewable World sent us un update about their SeCURE project, including pictures from a new solar installation in the Surkhet District. This installation is now generating power for a remote health post, which supports over 2,750 people. - The Siemenpuu Foundation shared information about a solar project in the Kalikut District. With our support, the local NGO HuRENDEC is preparing to bring solar energy to 200 off-grid households. - And in the Kavre and Makwanpur Districts, the Center for Rural Technology Nepal has installed 2 pico-hydroinstallations, now powering families, small mills and micro businesses in 2 off-grid villages. More information about these and other Climate Fund projects, can be found on our website. Thanks a lot to all those involved and thanks to all those using EKOenergy-labelled energy.
"The shift to clean energy was not only a cheaper solution, it also increased client loyalty. They were able to expand their sales to green consumers, and by using an ecolabel they send the message that they are not only making a product, but that they are concerned about the production chain behind it.” Lajka Birkedal Hollesen, about the company Urban Beer, on LinkedIn
4. River Story: Restoring migration routes in Southwest Finland
For each MWh sold as EKOenergy hydropower, a contribution of at least 0.10 € is paid into our Environmental Fund. The money from this Fund is used to finance river restoration projects. In 2018 EKOenergy paid 25,000 € to the Finnish organisation Valonia for the removal of migration barriers and improvement of river habitats in Southwest Finland. Most migratory fish populations in Finland are endangered, or worse, close to extinction, due to the construction of dams, dredging of streams, or due to reduced water quality. We just published a new leaflet about the project, in the series River Stories: Restoring migration routes in Southwest Finland. You can find many more River Stories on our website.
5. EKOenergy in the media
Catalan radio station "Catalunya Radio" interviewed Marta García from the Spanish NGO Ecoserveis and Glòria Monterrubio from the EKOenergy Secretariat about EKOenergy and about the transition to 100% renewable energy. The Luxembourg InfoGreen website, which focuses on sustainable development, published a short article about EKOenergy and about our Luxembourg licensed seller EIDA. And The Little Scandinavian wrote an article about the nominees of the Nordic Council Environment Prize, including a nice overview of our work. "More than ever the climate need people, people who care, who do what they can." Thanks a lot to all those involved!
"On 11.11, at (almost) 11:11 pm, EKOenergy's LinkedIn page has 1111 followers. Right.. I agree, this information is not very relevant by itself. But consider it as a reminder: if you are interested in #climateaction and #renewableenergy, then EKOenergy's page is definitely something for you (too).” Steven Vanholme, EKOenergy, on LinkedIn.
The Production Gap Report – produced by leading research organisations and the UN – is the first assessment of the gap between Paris Agreement goals and countries’ planned production of coal, oil and gas. The world is on track to produce far more coal, oil and gas than would be consistent with limiting warming to 1.5°C or 2°C, creating a “production gap” that makes climate goals much harder to reach. The Production Gap Report complements the UN Environment Programme Emissions Gap Report, which shows that country pledges fall short of the emission reductions needed to meet global temperature limits. The new report also points out that governments’ continued support for coal, oil and gas extraction is a big part of the problem. "We’re in a deep hole – and we need to stop digging.” For the full report, see http://productiongap.org/
We at EKOenergy are always looking to grow our network. If you want more information about becoming a partner of ours, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
