Covid Update

Sorry I didn't send an update re Covid last week but I ended up being on sick leave all week. Today I am working from home but feeling much better. Not Covid, it's probably only a matter of time but I haven't had it as yet.

Covid seems to be continuing to impact on families.  Last week we had 13 new student cases of Covid but no staff cases and 18 students isolating because of family contacts.  However, this week we already have 6 student Covid cases and 8 students isolating.  We have 2 staff absent this week with Covid and 1 staff member isolating.  I will send out my usual update at the end of this week, my health permitting.

Kapa Haka Group Marae Visit

Our Kapa haka group with Anne, Coral, Mary Anne and Jason and a group of parents headed off to the Puketeraki Marae this morning for their overnight stay and will return at the end of tomorrow.  They are well prepped and very excited about their trip. We hope to share photos and videos with you upon their return.  Thanks Anne Jenkins for organising this for these lucky children.

Pink Shirt Day

Join us on Friday 20th May, 2022 as we Kōrero Mai, Kōrero Atu, Mauri Tū, Mauri Ora – Speak Up, Stand Together, Stop Bullying!  Wear pink to support the cause and we will have a fun afternoon of related tribe activities.

SCHOOL NOTICES

ChessPower Central Otago Regional Chess Tournament

Yesterday, Wānaka Primary School hosted the ChessPower Central Otago Regional Chess Tournament. The previous years we always had numbers around or above 100 participants from multiple schools in the Upper Clutha area. With only 22 children from WPS and 4 students from MAC signed up for this year’s tournament, the atmosphere was rather cosy and relaxed but still competitive. The 26 students were all mixed up and played 7 games of chess against each other.  Although some WPS students had to face MAC’s senior students for a game, they still gave their best and even won or tied the odd game. The various chess badges the children could earn were again in high demand. In the end, everyone had a great day full of chess and chess related activities. Maybe we will get the chance to join another tournament next term at Remarkables Primary School.

We are selling banana boxes of dry pine kindling to fundraise for our girls' and boys' clubs.  Support our students and keep your home warm this Winter.

PB4L SCHOOL-WIDE GOAL

Positive Behaviour For Learning - PB4L

PB4L School-Wide looks at behaviour and learning from a whole-of-school as well as an individual child perspective.  The framework is based on international evidence and is helping New Zealand schools build a culture where positive behaviour and learning is a way of life.

Each fortnight we focus on a school wide goal to encourage positive behaviours.  The current goal is:  'We enter and leave areas in a respectful way'.

Growing Taller

Growing Taller is a fun, activity-based group programme for children who may be having a hard time at home or school; contributing to poor self-image, anxiety, lack of confidence, issues around loss and separation, and causing difficulties for them in managing their emotions.

Growing Taller provides a place for children to share and learn skills in a supportive, safe, peer environment. Children have the opportunity to change the way they see themselves, increase their self-esteem, and learn to identify, express and manage their emotions.

The next Growing Taller programme in Wānaka is planned for Term 3 for 8 children aged 8-11 years.

It starts on the 2nd of August and will run for 7 sessions, once a week on Tuesday mornings, 9-11am at the Wānaka Community Hub.
