A message from Parents for Recapitation As people from other schools have been asking to sign the recapitation petition, the WPS Parents for Recapitation group have set up another petition asking parents and caregivers from other schools to sign it if they support recapitation; that is retaining Year 7s and 8s at primary school. The current petition could not be changed without losing the data - we had 154 people sign this which does not reflect the 84% who were surveyed last year and wanted recapitiation. If you have already signed the WPS petition that was sent out earlier, that is great, no need to sign again. The Ministry would be of the view that for any consultation to be valid, it must come from all schools in Wānaka. So if you know of others with the same view please make them aware of the petition. Nathan Wallis said when asked about recapitation: 'children are far better served, develop more leadership skills, play more, are more protected from adolescent disruption, and biologically more ready for high school if they remain at primary school for years 7 and 8. They are allowed the opportunity to further develop and ‘cement in’ the dispositions, self control and resilience that will help them to navigate the turbulent adolescent years. Their vulnerability is not a result of one thing, but more about them being at a crossroads of development as they go through a major developmental change - puberty and adolescence. The brain has a period of “exuberance” around 11 years (meaning it grows/develops faster than usual) and transitions like this in human development are associated with social/emotional vulnerability. In the same way they crash into everything at this age because their body is growing faster than their mental perception of it, it’s like their emotions are changing faster than they can comprehend, so this makes them vulnerable emotionally. They are vulnerable for all of adolescence because of this, just esp at 11.' Here is the link for the petition; https://chng.it/N6TczD7Tmz. We would also like to add that it is not just the parents of this year's year 6 who need to sign, but at any age if you would prefer your children to remain at a full primary for their year 7 and 8 years of schooling. Please feel free to share the link to the petition with anyone you think may be in support of signing. |

Parents' Survey The analysis of the parents' survey can be found here. The results have been analysed under themes. Click on the link to have a look at the responses under percentages. We had 235 responses, which is pretty good compared to other surveys. Overall the Board and staff were delighted with the positivity of the responses. We noted also the large number of parents who answered 'unsure' to quite a few of the questions. We try and send a lot of info home in the newsletter and we are constantly adding more to the website under the parents section. Please go and have a look on the website if you are seeking information or come in and see your classroom teachers. We do not get a good response to parent information meetings at school. If you know of a way that would better reach you, please let me know. And remember, once we are back at level one you are welcome into the school to find out what you don't know.
We took heart from the survey, that you believe we have a committed staff and a great school. We work hard to ensure we keep getting better and better so your children continue to have the best learning opportunities possible. This survey also provided us with lots of information to add into our strategic plan for 2022-2025. The Board will, early next next term, ask you to complete a survey to help us with strategic planning. It is not a tickbox survey but you can respond in statements to questions. Coral's Back Coral was away last week as her mum fell ill and passed away. Coral has bravely coped and we send all our love and condolences. Room 18 are so pleased to see her back this week. End of term Remember the holidays begin on Friday 1st October and we look forward to seeing everyone back on Monday 18th October. The fourth term finishes on Wednesday 15th December with the 2022 school year starting on Wednesday 2nd February. I am taking some of my sabbatical leave until the end of term, but will be in touch through the newsletter next week. If you need to contact me please don't hesitate to email and I will get back to you. |

Pod 7 Rainbow Market This term, Pod 7 have focused on advertising and economics as part of their deep learning projects. Their end goal was to help the school raise money by selling goods at the now cancelled Friday Night Lights. Pod 7's goods were purchased prior to lockdown and the students would like the opportunity to continue with their projects. We are now calling our celebration of colour the Pod 7 Rainbow Market and it will be held during the school day on Thursday 30th September. Due to Level 2, only students will be able to attend these markets. Goods for sale include a wide range of toys, lollies and some stationery items. All items range in price between $1 and $5. If you are able to send your child to school on that day with a small amount of money to support the market, it would be greatly appreciated. Pod 7 would like to thank the PTA for ordering the goods and making our market possible. |

School Cross Country We would like to give all students the opportunity to run in a cross country race with their year group. We need to abide by Level 2 guidelines, so these races will run in clusters, of under 100, at school. Unfortunately we will not be able to have any spectators. Please could we ask students to wear sneakers to school each day until the end of term, as they will practice running their course before their race which will be held next week. Unfortunately, students will not have the opportunity to represent our school, as the Upper Clutha and Central Otago events have had to be cancelled. |

Head Lice Are Back Head lice are (an unwelcome) part of life, and are easily spread between people, particularly children. The key to managing head lice is early detection: look through your child’s hair on a regular basis – nominate a certain night of the week so it becomes routine. Use your fingers or a head lice comb, and look for little brown insects on the scalp. The eggs are almost invisible before they hatch, so by the time you spot the little white eggs on the hair shaft they are already hatched. Do not treat your child unless you see live lice. The best treatment is thorough combing with a head lice comb and lots of conditioner in the hair. This should be done every 2nd day for 10 days. If you choose to use a head lice shampoo, you should still do the wet combing as described above. Shampoos do not kill eggs, and do not always kill all the live lice. Do not use animal products on your child’s scalp. They are harmful to humans. For more information: www.healthed.govt.nz/resources/headlice-facts. Contact for our local Public Health Nurse Pip McLean is our local Public Health Nurse - should you wish to get in contact with Pip her contact details are: 03 440 4309 or 0272 839 395 or email Pip.McLean@southerndhb.govt.nz |

Understanding Clubs and Not For Profits Organisations Needs Tiny Carruthers, Sport Central, often fields approaches from clubs and not for profit organisations short of a treasurer, secretary, administrator or other committee responsibilities. It’s understandable with so many clubs and societies in our district, that many struggle to fill the roles from within their membership. With the degree of competency for each role increasing, pressure is mounting. Sport Central, Volunteer South and funders want to understand the problem clearly before considering a solution. So, a survey has been developed to understand the extent of the problem. This survey is not exclusive to sports club and includes all clubs and not for profit organisations. If clubs and ‘not for profits’ could spend five minutes filing in the survey, we will have a clear idea of how serious the problem is and which roles and issues are most challenging for clubs and not for profit organisations. Please see the link to the survey below: https://form.jotform.com/212557113334044 If you need more details call Tiny on 0272124290. Thank you for taking the time to do this, we appreciate it very much. Sport Central and Volunteer South have also combined to offer an online interactive workshop for clubs and not for profit organisations wishing to explore sponsorship as a funding avenue. The workshop has been made possible with the funding assistance of Central Lakes Trust, Otgao Community Trust and Community Trust Southland. With limited spots available clubs and organisations are encouraged to register now. Email gillian@volunteersouth.org.nz for full details and to register or sign up via this link https://forms.gle/EVMwTmkEe5PJkEGJ8 |
