That clock is steadily ticking down to the last day of school, but the pace of the days and weeks seem to be on a speed dial. There is that end of year hum I love about schools. Reports have been written - they hit your email box on Friday, Parent Deep Dives saw lots of parents sharing their child's learning and progress with them, the panto is in full rehearsal mode, the sun is shining and our tamariki are loving being outdoors, playing and learning. End of year activities are kicking in with bike and scooter skills, and the planning for end of year formalities such as the Year 6 graduation assembly, water fun day and student leadership celebration day, has begun. Activities in brief for the next week or so Year 4 are having scooter training in the Scooter Ready programme with QLDC Road Safety educators Pod 3 are off to the Clyde Dam as part of their Deep Learning work tomorrow, Wednesday 27th November We have over 40 Year 5 & 6 students taking part in the COPPSA Triathlon in Queenstown on Thursday 28th November Reports go home on Friday Next week on Tuesday 3rd and Wednesday 4th are our Parent/Teacher conferences from 3.20-5pm. The evening performance is on Wednesday 11th December starting at 6pm. A reminder to all of the cast - there is a full practice (with costumes and props) this Sunday 1st December 9am-12pm, and next Sunday 8th, 9am - 12pm. End of Year Written Reports As we have other years, in our school reports we use the following 'grades' to indicate where children are at according to their expected age/year level. The three terms used are: working towards the expectation, working within the expectation and working above the expectation. Children progress and achieve within a band of progress and achievement points, not at a specific indicator or single data point. For example in maths there are many strands and concepts the children need to master, so we prefer to explain this by saying they are working towards the expectation if they are not within the expectation band, rather than below. We are always working towards the next goal for that child. 'Below' tends to give a label rather than showing that they are working hard to get to the next step in their learning. Working 'within' is also a big band, with many different indicators to achieve, and students can be at the lower end, or the higher end, at different times and in different situations with their achievement and learning. 'Within' expectation describes this better than 'at' which indicates a specific point, and there isn't one. There are a lot of factors that need to be considered. Also if children read their reports it acknowledges that learning is a journey, and each year the 'sign posts' get more challenging as does their learning. We are never just below, at, or above in life - we are on a journey to find out our strengths, the areas we need to work on and to work towards an unknown future. And in an unknown future, who wants to be labelled as 'below' in their first years of learning at school. |

WPS PTA School Disco $2 entry at the door. Parents please drop your child/children off outside at the main entrance, where one of our disco helpers will welcome them in. Children please bring a named water bottle. We are asking parents, if you are not already designated as a helper, to not go into the hall. Please pick up your children at the finish times below from the tennis courts beside the hall. No children can leave the hall until their dance time is finished. This drop off and pick up zone allows us to move one group out quickly so we can move the next group in. Having extra parents in the mix just makes it too hard. Year 5 and 6 Disco - Permission to leave without a parent Please email the office prior to next Thursday if you are giving your Y5 or Y6 child permission to walk or bike home without a parent. If no permission is received, your child will need a parent to collect them. |

COPSSA Orienteering Congratulations to all the competitors who competed at the COPSSA Orienteering Championships at Jardine Park in Queenstown last Friday. The fastest times around the course were under 30 minutes with the slowest competitors close to 2 hours. It was a real test of map reading, as well as reading the landscape and moving from A to B most efficiently. Well done to Finley Sharman and Izzy McFarlane who were both in the Top 10. A massive thank you to the parents who helped on the day. As always, your help is much appreciated. Over 40 kids are competing in Queenstown at the COPSSA Triathlon Championships this week. We wish all individuals and teams the best for Thursday. Orienteering Results |

The framework is based on international evidence and is helping New Zealand schools build a culture where positive behaviour and learning is a way of life. BookHub BookHub is an relatively new NZ based website where you can search for books you want to buy online from NZ based booksellers rather than from overseas sites.
