Lack of Coverage Fox News programmers decided to largely ignore slain Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick lying in state in the Capitol Rotunda. Sicknick died of head injuries sustained on January 6 while he defended the Capitol from pro-Trump insurrectionists who stormed the building in a violent attempt to overturn the 2020 election. His remains arrived at the Capitol at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday night, and President Joe Biden joined Congressional lawmakers and law enforcement officials in paying their respects to Sicknick. The ceremony was carried live by CNN and MSNBC. Over at Fox, however, the network’s focus on the ceremony was sporadic. Observe the 6th NBC News presidential historian Michael Beschloss called for the country to treat the Capitol insurrection as the same kind of momentous historical event as the terror attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. "Conceivably, this could have taken away our democracy, and this is one reason why I think we have to observe the 6th of January every single year as a time that we had a very close call to remind us that we have to be eternally vigilant because democracy is fragile," said Beschloss speaking to Rachel Maddow. 🎤 Jay Carney on Joe Biden, Jen Psaki, Fox News In an exclusive interview with Mediaite, former White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said that President Joe Biden is the man for this moment, Jen Psaki is “killing it” as chief spokesperson, and making nice with Fox News is a fool’s errand. Carney — who is currently senior vice president of Global Corporate Affairs for Amazon — served as director of communications for then-Vice President Joe Biden before inheriting the podium in the Brady Briefing Room from Robert Gibbs in 2011. His tenure as President Barack Obama’s press secretary would be the longest of any chief spokesperson since the 90s, and overlapped with my own 9-year stint covering the White House. Tommy Christopher reached out to Carney for his take on a Daily Beast report that falsely suggested that Psaki screens out tough questions, but we covered some other ground as well. Read this fascinating interview here. Shock Poll Support for a 2024 run by former President Donald Trump has cratered by 20 points since December, in a stunning poll that illustrates the political bind many Republicans find themselves in. Psaki Under Fire Before her current role as White House Press Secretary for the Biden administration, Jen Psaki was a paid contributor for CNN. Her prior experience as communications director under the Obama administration led to valuable insights into the messaging strategies and tactics under then-President Donald Trump. But one of Psaki’s comments is coming back to haunt her: a homophobic dig at Sen. Lindsey Graham. Bloomberg Pleads to Send Kids Back to School Michael Bloomberg is pleading for Biden to get children back to school as soon as possible. “It’s time for Joe Biden to stand up and say ‘the kids are the most important things,'” Bloomberg said. “And the teachers are just going to have to suck it up and stand up and provide an education. Otherwise, these kids have no chance whatsoever. It is a disaster what’s happening to them.” Carlson's Unconvincing Ploy Marjorie Taylor Greene has been a fixture of Tucker Carlson Tonight in recent weeks — but not because she has claimed the Sandy Hook massacre was staged or endorsed assassinating U.S. politicians. The Fox News host has instead condemned and mocked the rest of the media for reporting on those comments, elevating Greene beyond her position as a freshman congresswoman he suggests.< On Tuesday, Carlson continued his defense of Greene — and feigned ignorance of QAnon, a theory he's covered fairly extensively himself. Eric Trump Claims Dad ‘Most Beloved’ Figure in US History in First TV Hit of Brief Period Between Insurrection and 2nd Impeachment Trial OPINION It’s not clear if it’s wilful disinformation on display or a more deeply seeded psychological delusion, but the disconnection between reality and what is portrayed on Fox News prime time is a chasm that is impossibly growing larger. The latest example? Eric Trump, son of former President Donald Trump, showing up on Hannity in his first television appearance since a deadly insurrection was led on the Capitol by supporters of his father on Jan. 6. Eric Trump’s comments weren’t qualitatively different than almost every other Fox News appearance during the Trump administration. He hit the same glowing notes in the manner of a child seeking the love of a distant father with hyperbolic praise. Almost every kid is proud of his or her parents, and the loving pride on display is to be expected. But his comment that there “has never been a more beloved political figure in our country’s history,” is simply not true. Yes, Trump received 74 million votes, but...
