Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Newsmax TV

President Donald Trump told viewers on Sunday evening to dump Fox News in favor of Newsmax or One America News Network after Wall Street Journal editor John Bussey weighed in on a Fox segment about the president’s lagging performance in the polls.

“Fox News gladly puts up the phony suppression polls as soon as they come out,” Trump wrote in a message on Twitter.

“Fox News weekend afternoons is the worst! Getting into @CNN and MSDNC territory. Watch @OANN & @newsmax instead. Much better!” he added.

You may not have heard of Newsmax TV if you're not politics-obsessed. But it is indeed a thing.

Newsmax has been around for over 20 years, and was for a time a regular destination for Drudge links, peaking in the first term  of President Barack Obama. Like Vince Foster-ism in the late 90s, birtherism was good to the site in the 2000s.

Newsmax faded somewhat in prominence on the right over the last decade, among countless competitors. But in the Trump era, its TV venture Newsmax TV has been regaining steam with its line-up of committed, rabid Trump partisans like Wayne Allyn Root, Greg Kelly, and even Sean Spicer.

With Trump offering such a prominent blessing to the venture, and separating them out from Fox along with OANN as the "real" (read:pro-Trump) news, they have a big win under their belt. Much like "alternative" to Twitter Parler.com picked up mega-steam with a plug by Donald Trump Jr., Newsmax TV should see a huge boost this week off of just that one presidential mention.

MEDIA LOSER:
J.K. Rowling

Where our media winner today benefits from both knowing its fan base and catering to it, our media loser has done just the opposite. Repeatedly and almost aggressively.

Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling posted a series of tweets to Twitter on Sunday which claimed young people struggling with their mental health are being pushed to medicine, hormones, and surgery — comparing the practice to the widely criticized act of LGBTQ+ conversion therapy.

It's not Rowling's first run-in with a fanbase that is comprised in large part by young adults and millennials. The writer recently endured backlash for controversial tweets that questioned the legitimacy of transgender individuals, which prompted some Harry Potter actors to push back.

On Sunday, Rowling liked a tweet comparing hormone prescriptions to anti-depressants and labeled those who have decided to take medications for mental illnesses instead of spending the “time and effort” to “heal” their minds lazy. After some back-and-forth over the attribution of tweets, Rowling doubled down on her basic rhetoric, and Twitter unleashed on her.

Transgender model Munroe Bergdorf and transgender drag queen June Birch, among many others, took to Twitter in anger. Bergdorf begged the author to stop “condescendingly tweeting from her mansion” while Birch noted she is “literally harming the trans community” by sharing misinformation.

The antagonistic but unapologetic tone of Rowling's tweets on subjects related to feminism and social justice continue to play poorly for her among those most likely to be fans of her work and otherwise progressive liberal politics.

The A-Block

But why though

President Donald Trump set his sights on Bubba Wallace Monday, calling on the NASCAR driver to apologize for last month’s noose controversy while also blasting the racing organization for banning Confederate flags.

“That & Flag decision has caused lowest ratings EVER!” Trump tweeted.

Daily Beast reporter Lachlan Markay points out that Saturday’s Xfinity race was actually the highest rated Xfinity race in three years.

"Going full Klan"

In fact, Trump was pummeled over the tweet. online.

And also on air by Lindsey Graham... sort of.

Kayleigh McEnany defended it though, and brought up Jussie Smollett. Then dodged it at the briefing.

Where is Fauci

In the past few weeks, many have taken notice of Dr. Anthony Fauci not making as many media appearances as he did in the first few weeks of the coronavirus pandemic.

On Face the Nation Sunday, Margaret Brennan said in the past few months, they have attempted to book Fauci to talk about the pandemic but the Trump administration has blocked it at every turn.

CNN’s Brian Stelter tore into the White House over this apparent effort to prevent members of their anti-coronavirus task force from engaging with the media.

Capital Black

FOX News Media will capitalize “Black” when it is used as an adjective to describe people, a community or culture, the company announced on Monday. The news comes after other outlets, following the AP Stylebook's lead, have made similar changes.

"FOX News Media made the decision after consulting with its diversity team and researching the history of language, culture and customs," the company said.

Interesting statistic

"I think if you could clock the amount of time he’s spent actually in the Oval Office versus the amount of time he spends in the little dining room off the Oval Office with the cable news networks of one form or another on — it would be a very interesting statistic," said John Bolton on Sunday's Face the Nation. That would be interesting don't you think?

Kanye

Kanye West says he's running.

Mark Cuban is here for it.

In other daily briefing news

Kayleigh McEnany ended Monday’s press briefing by raging at reporters for repeatedly asking about Trump's position on the Confederate Flag while failing to ask about violence in New York City.

Bad News

Scott Gottlieb, the former FDA commissioner who has regularly appeared on CBS’ Face the Nation during the coronavirus pandemic, again sounded the alarm bells Sunday about the virus spreading.

Margaret Brennan asked Gottlieb where the U.S. is heading right now and he answered, “We’re right back where we were at the peak of the epidemic during the New York outbreak."

And there was more...

Overwhelmingly more, in fact

Doctors in San Antonio’s Methodist Hospital have seen “an explosion of Covid,” they told CNN, especially in younger patients and mothers-to-be — and are beginning to run out of resources.

Must See Clip

Soldiers React to Hannity Interview

The Washington Post just published an investigation into the platoon that served — for just three days  — under 1Lt. Clint Lorance in Afghanistan. In those three days, Lorance allegedly committed three war crimes, and the platoon swiftly turned him in. He was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to a nineteen-year prison sentence. Trump pardoned and freed him last year.

Sean Hannity took up Clint Lorance’s cause while he was incarcerated and lobbied Trump to pardon Lorance, calling the conviction “a national disgrace.” Fox News host Pete Hegseth, himself a combat veteran who lobbies for accused war criminals on and off the air, took up Lorance’s cause as well.

Despite the testimony of the platoon, Lorance was celebrated by many as a hero upon his release. He appeared at a Republican fundraiser alongside Trump, as well as for fawning interviews on Fox & Friends and Hannity.

The Post, in a video interview with members of the platoon, had them react to Lorance’s appearance on Hannity.

It is a dramatic moment.
