This comes as Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency reported that the Coronavirus death toll in Northern Ireland has increased to nearly 3,000. The latest statistics from the agency show that 13 deaths involving Covid-19 occurred in the week 20th to 26th March 2021. A leading doctor has said Northern Ireland “can’t stay locked down forever” and expressed hope that the vaccination roll-out could stave off the threat of another wave of coronavirus. Dr Alan Stout, the chair of the British Medical Association’s GP committee in Northern Ireland, also stressed that authorities must be prepared to “slow down” and “halt” the easing of lockdown if infection rates do begin to increase. The frustration with the Stormont Executive over the lack of clarity on easing lockdown is “off the scale”, a leading business representative has said. Glyn Roberts, chief executive of Retail NI, also spoke out against the “political instability” that has rocked the Northern Ireland government in recent days, following the decision by the Public Prosecution Service not to pursue anyone in relation to the funeral of Bobby Storey.
