Hacker gains access to damaging testimony about Gaetz, source says |
A hacker on Monday gained access to a file containing the sworn depositions of two women involved in the investigation into Matt Gaetz, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for attorney general, a source familiar with the matter told NBC News. That file included the testimony of the woman who alleges she had sex with Gaetz when she was 17 years old in 2017, as well as the testimony of a second woman who said she witnessed the encounter, and the information is unredacted, according to the source. A source familiar with the file accessed characterized the contents as very detailed and damaging to Gaetz. It’s not immediately clear if any of the hacked information has been made public. Gaetz has repeatedly denied the allegations against him, including that he had sex with a minor. The House Ethics Committee plans to meet Wednesday to discuss its investigation into allegations against Gaetz of sexual misconduct and illicit drug use. The investigation was effectively halted when Gaetz resigned from Congress, but the committee is under pressure to release its report. |

Prosecutors oppose dismissing Trump hush money conviction |
Prosecutors with the Manhattan district attorney's office said today that they oppose President-elect Donald Trump’s efforts to toss out his hush money conviction, but suggested they would be open to delaying his sentencing until after his second term. In a letter to Judge Juan Merchan, prosecutors noted that Trump was convicted by a jury, but citing “the need to balance competing constitutional interests” after his election victory, they proposed freezing the case for four years until he is out of office. Trump’s sentencing was set for Nov. 26, after he was convicted in May on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to cover up an affair with an adult film star. Trump denies the allegations. Trump’s defense attorneys have sought a dismissal. His transition team released a statement after today’s move by the prosecution, calling it “a total and definitive victory” for Trump. |
Ukraine launches U.S.-made long-range missiles into Russia for first time |
Ukraine has fired U.S.-made long-range missiles into Russian territory for the first time, according to two U.S. officials, on the 1,000th day of the war. Russia’s Defense Ministry said five of the missiles were shot down, but fragments of another “fell on the technical territory of a military facility in the Bryansk region, causing a fire that was quickly extinguished.” There were no casualties or damage, the ministry said. The escalation comes a day after the Biden administration gave Ukraine authorization to use the ATACMS missiles, marking a major shift in U.S. policy. In response to that policy change, Russian President Vladimir Putin has lowered the threshold for his country’s use of nuclear weapons. |
Bomb cyclone targets the West Coast, wildfires raging in Northeast |
We’re tracking extreme weather on both coasts, as a bomb cyclone takes aim at the West, and new wildfires continues to erupt in the Northeast. In the Pacific Northwest, a powerful low pressure system, followed by an atmospheric river, is set to bring heavy rain, high winds and up to three feet of mountain snow beginning later today through Friday. The storm will bring damaging wind gusts as high as 70 mph across northern California, as well as parts of Oregon and Washington, and could cause numerous power outages and tree damage. On the other side of the country, Red Flag Warnings are in effect for more than 6 million people in Massachusetts and a special weather statement has been issued for Connecticut and Rhode Island. Conditions in the Northeast are so dry, New York City has issued its first drought warning in more than 20 years, but there’s finally some much-needed rain in the forecast for the region later in the week. |
