Tyre Nichols funeral draws thousands in Memphis |
Thousands are joining the family of Tyre Nichols to lay him to rest in Memphis today, more than three weeks after he died following a brutal beating from police. Vice President Kamala Harris is among those attending the funeral service for Nichols, and the Rev. Al Sharpton is delivering the eulogy. The funeral comes five days after the city of Memphis released disturbing videos of police beating Nichols after a traffic stop on Jan. 7. On Monday, Memphis police said that two more officers have been relieved of duty following Nichols’ arrest, in addition to the five officers who were fired and charged with second-degree murder and several other counts. The Memphis Fire Department also announced on Monday that two EMTs and a lieutenant were fired on Monday for their “actions or inactions” at the scene. |

FBI search of Biden’s beach house turns up no additional classified documents |
The FBI conducted a search today of President Joe Biden’s home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, but found no additional classified documents, Biden’s personal attorney said in a statement this afternoon. “The DOJ’s planned search of the President’s Rehoboth residences, conducted in coordination and cooperation with the President’s attorneys, has concluded,” Biden’s attorney, Bob Bauer, said in a statement. “No documents with classified markings were found.” “Consistent with the process in Wilmington, the DOJ took for further review some materials and handwritten notes that appear to relate to his time as Vice President,” the statement said. Bauer said in an earlier statement that the Justice Department conducted the planned search with Biden's full support and cooperation. A source familiar with the matter said no warrant was involved and the search was consensual. Classified documents were discovered previously at Biden’s Wilmington residence and his former office at the Penn Biden Center, a Washington think tank. On Tuesday, NBC News reported that the FBI had also searched the offices at the Penn Biden Center in mid-November, after classified documents were discovered there by Biden’s team. Biden is at the White House, where he’s meeting with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy today to discuss the debt ceiling. |
Deadly ice storm causing travel chaos and power outages |
For the third straight day, a deadly ice storm is wreaking havoc and causing major power outages in the South. About 25 million people remain under winter weather alerts across the region, but Texas is seeing the worst impacts. Nearly 300,000 homes and businesses there are without power, mostly in the eastern part of the state. Texas could see up to another half-inch of ice accumulation today, causing more dangerous travel conditions. At least six people have been killed on slick roads in Texas. Three people died in a rollover crash southwest of Lubbock, and deaths were also reported on the roads in Austin, and in Tarrant and Schleicher Counties. The storm is also having a major impact on air travel nationwide, with more than 2,000 flights canceled as of this writing, according to FlightAware. The NBA has announced that tonight’s game between the Detroit Pistons and the Washington Wizards has been postponed, after severe weather conditions prevented the Pistons from flying back to Detroit after their game on Monday in Dallas against the Mavericks. In the Northeast and New England, wind chill alerts have been issued across those regions for the next arctic blast. By Saturday, the polar vortex will send temperatures plunging into the single digits, with lows below zero, from New York to Maine. |

Federal Reserve raises interest rates by another quarter of a point |
The Federal Reserve announced this afternoon that it is raising interest rates again by a quarter of a point, in its ongoing battle against inflation. It’s the Fed’s eighth and smallest hike since March, raising rates to a range of 4.5 to 4.75 percent. In December, the Fed raised rates by half a point, following four straight three-quarter point hikes. Inflation cooled in December to 6.5 percent year-over-year, but the Fed has signaled it will continue to ratchet up rates until consumer price growth gets closer to 2 percent. |
