No Church Too Big To Fail | For years I lived about 30 minutes from Willow Creek, the influential mega church founded by Bill Hybels. I vividly remember walking into the church for the first time. Even though I’m not a big fan of seeker sensitive churches, I was awed by the place. There were waterfalls outside (and inside) the building, an escalator, a café, and even grocery store for at-need community members. I felt like I was walking through a mall. At that time, they were welcoming more than 25,000 worshipers a weekend. Combined with the fact that they had one of the most influential pastors in the country, Willow seemed too big to fail. It wasn’t. Hybels resigned amid accusations of sexual misconduct and the church floundered. The pastor that succeeded him quit along with the entire elder board. Then Covid hit. Today attendance has been cut in half and money is tight, leading to some painful decisions for the church: Willow Creek Cuts Staff Budget by $6.5 Million. I was sad to see this news. But it’s a good reminder that God’s mission is not dependent on any one church or ministry—no matter how large. Individual churches come and go, but God’s kingdom marches on. Of course, Willow Creek isn’t the only church feeling a pinch these days. Congregations of all sizes are facing budget shortfalls amid recent challenges. If that describes your congregation, I recommend checking out When the Budget Is Tight. This resource will help you develop good financial tools, avoid unhealthy conflict, and help you handle a budget crunch. |

| | Developing a Culture of Stewardship Money: It's the consistent question mark in the life of many churches. Do we talk about it too much? Do we talk about it enough? How do we talk about it without making people feel like they're being pumped for all they have? The Bible has a lot to say about money, and if we're not addressing it well we're depriving our people—and our churches—of all that God has for our lives, and our finances.
