| IMPORTANT | | | Nepal Air Crash | ‘Nil’ Chance of Finding Survivors All 72 people on board the 27-minute flight from Kathmandu to the tourist town of Pokhara are presumed to have died, among them 15 foreigners. “We have collected 68 bodies so far. We are searching for four more bodies,” said local official Tek Bahadur. The plane spiraled out of control a mile from Pokhara airport, with one eyewitness saying the pilot deliberately avoided hitting people and buildings. “The flames were so hot that we couldn’t go near the wreckage. I heard a man crying for help, but because of the flames and smoke we couldn’t help him,” said resident Bishnu Tiwari. (Sources: AP, AFP) |

| | Mind the Gap | Richest 1% Captured 63% of Wealth Created Since Pandemic Released to coincide with the World Economic Forum’s summit in Davos, Oxfam’s Survival of the Richest report showed that the average billionaire gained $1.7 million for every $1 of new global wealth earned by those in the bottom 90%. “While ordinary people are making daily sacrifices … the super-rich have outdone even their wildest dreams,” said the U.K. charity’s Gabriela Bucher. “Forty years of tax cuts for the super-rich have shown that a rising tide doesn’t lift all ships — just the superyachts.” A 5% tax on the most wealthy could raise two billion people out of poverty. | | Counting the Cost | Search for Survivors Continues After Ukraine Apartment Block Strike The death toll from a Russian missile attack on a residential building in Dnipro rose to 30 Sunday, making it the deadliest attack on Ukrainian civilians in months. A further 79 people were wounded and at least 30 remained unaccounted for. “I have no words, I have no emotions, I feel nothing except a great emptiness inside,” wrote survivor Anastasiia Shvets on Instagram. Shvets was pictured clutching a green fluffy dinosaur and a gold christmas garland as she waited to be rescued from beneath a pile of rubble. Meanwhile, Russia and Belarus began joint military exercises, sparking fears of a fresh offensive. (Sources: NYT, AP, Reuters) |

| | Oversight? | House Oversight Chair Wants Biden’s Visitor Logs — But Not Trump’s After classified documents were found at President Biden’s Wilmington home, Republican James Comer demanded “a list of individuals who have visited his residence,” arguing that without one “the American people will never know who had access to these highly sensitive documents.” U.S. presidents aren’t required to disclose visitors to their homes and former President Donald Trump — who kept a much larger stash of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago residence — was not asked for visitor logs. Democrat Rep. Dan Goldman, meanwhile, pointed out the differences between the two cases, highlighting the “broad cooperation from the president who clearly takes this very seriously.” (Sources: Reuters, Politico) |

| INTRIGUING | | Silver Lining? | HRT Could Reduce Risk of Alzheimer’s for Some Women New research from two U.K. universities suggests that hormone replacement therapy could cut dementia risk for women who carry a gene called APOE4 — the strongest risk factor gene for Alzheimer’s disease. The “observational study” found that HRT was associated with “better memory and larger brain volumes” for those with APOE4 — but it did not consider whether they went on to develop dementia. There’s still lots of work to be done, but Richard Oakley of the Alzheimer’s Society said “studies of this kind are important as they hint at a link between HRT and the changes to the brain.” (Source: BBC) |

| | When in Rome | Does Ancient Roman Concrete Self-Heal? How is it that the 2,000-year-old Pantheon still boasts the world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome? For decades, researchers have been trying to understand just why ancient Roman concrete is so durable — and MIT’s Admir Masic has added one more piece to the puzzle. Masic and colleagues used chemical mapping and multi-scale imaging tools to examine strange white “clasts” in the concrete that were assumed to be the result of poor mixing or substandard materials. Turns out the clasts were deliberately added at very high temperatures, contributing to stronger bonds and faster curing times — and enabling cracks to “self-heal.” (Source: Ars Technica) |

| | Speed Demons | Amsterdam Cyclists Demand Crackdown on Turbocharged e-Bikes The Dutch capital’s known for its elegant canals, lively nightlife and — until recently — its cyclist-friendly streets. Now modified e-bikes are wreaking havoc on the city’s once-sedate cycle paths, with two-thirds of residents saying they no longer feel safe on the streets. “The problem is not normal e-bikes, but ever more souped-up bikes that are basically illegal mopeds,” said activist Esther van Garderen. She also came out strongly against a plan to force children to attach flags to their bikes: “To think that the solution is that children need to have a flag is blaming the victim to the max.” (Source: The Guardian) |

| | | Freedom of Expression | Swedish Govt Plans to Scrap Dancing Permits “You can dance, you can jive …” And you may soon be able to do it for free. The Swedish government wants to remove a decades-old requirement for restaurants, nightclubs and bars to buy a permit to allow their patrons to boogie the night away. “It is not reasonable for the state to regulate people’s dance,” said Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer. “By removing the requirement for a dance permit, we also reduce bureaucracy and costs.” Under the new law, which may take effect as early as July 1, establishments will be able to report their dance motives to the police — at no cost. | | Nine Lives | Judd Trump Wins Second Snooker Masters in Thriller Final The Englishman, 33, came from two frames behind to beat veteran Mark Williams 10-8 in a packed Alexandra Palace in London. Williams, who was seeking his third title, last won the tournament when his opponent was 13. Trump pocketed the victory — and the $306,000 winner’s check — with a majestic break of 126. “It’s incredible really,” he said. “I got totally outplayed in the whole game. At 8-7 down I was gone and trying to hang on. I should have been out in the first round, should have been out in the second round and I should have lost this one, I’m like a cat.” (Sources: BBC, Sports Mole) |
