Friend, after a long August recess, Congress is back and looking to move a lot of things in a short amount of time. Our legislative agenda is ambitious — but if we organize we can build some real momentum behind these bills and priorities. Here’s what we’re laser-focused on this fall: A fully functional FCC: We need to make sure the Senate confirms Gigi Sohn to fill the fifth seat on the five-member Federal Communications Commission. The agency must get to the critically important work of protecting the open internet and do more to ensure that broadband is affordable and accessible to all. Protecting online privacy: The repeal of Roe v. Wade brought home how important our online privacy is. Congress has multiple bills moving — including the Fourth Amendment Is Not For Sale Act and the American Data Privacy and Protection Act — that could go a long way towards safeguarding our personal data. Restoring Net Neutrality: It’s bipartisan outside of DC, it’s a no-brainer and Congress has the right kind of bill teed up at last, so we need to push the Net Neutrality and Broadband Justice Act as far as we can before the midterms. Stop the giveaways to Big Media: Congress can and should take steps to protect and promote local journalism — but with the problematic Journalism Competition and Preservation Act they are going about it all wrong. This bill would harm local and independent publishers and news outlets and make it harder for online platforms to remove hateful and deceitful content. We cannot let this bill pass. And that’s just scratching the surface. There’s also legislation that would rein in predatory phone rates for incarcerated people and their families, threats to platforms’ ability to stop hate speech and disinformation and more. | ||||||||
