Biography

I was born in 1960, I went to Art College some decades ago and earned a Bachelor's in Painting with a minor in Art History. I have been drawing and painting from an early age with the mindset that I am an artist, have always wanted to be and always will be an artist. Having won my first paying commissions at age 13 gave external validation and encouragement, but it is what is in my genes that has made it a life long pratice. I come from a family that has spawned a number of artists /creatives and independent minded entrepreneurs within it's branches, across at least five generations. Within that family history I see why and how I am an artist. I am a father of six, grandfather of two - all of whom are also independent minded artists/creatives/ entrepreneurs. The apple has not fallen far.

I showed and sold paintings on the East coast of the U.S. for many years where I also opened and ran my own gallery and frame shop for 17 years before moving to the Midwest for a slower pace of life after a serious illness. I also taught painting and drawing at a local art association and through my Gallery during those 17 years, those are the basic facts, no polish, no fanfare.

Artist statement
The self portrait (left) is intended as an artist statement, it can be viewed in detail on the Portraits page. I let the painting speak for itself because it says everything about me, my work, my ability, my styles (plural), things I use, things possess, my work space, my personality and my maturity and anything else it may say to you, which may supercede any artsy wordcraft statement I might labor over.

Style(s) and Process
I do not subscribe to a single style or technique in my work, at best, I might be described as eclectic, I believe to be true to oneself as an artist, one must embrace all creative urges, explore and express them and share them if the results are good enough. I fully understand that philosophy flies in the face of Gallery and Marketing strategy of yore in its definition of consistency, but I say we can all afford to be true to self and artists have always been of this true mind. I am not an exception. What sells, sells but I paint what and how I choose to, regardless.

As an instructor, I always taught my students two basic rules. 1) the more ways you know how to start a painting the better, the more tools you have in your kit. 2) Do not paint like me, I will not teach you to paint like me - but I will guide to to learn how You paint.

As a painter, each painting or portrait I make is started and executed in the manner of the moment, influenced by my response to the subject, my response to what's happening on the canvas and what tools come out of my kit. You can see evidence of these processes and responses in the short videos that accompany some of the works posted on this site, Sometimes I draw a rough sketch, sometimes I don't, but go in with large shapes of color in an abstract approach- all the drawing happens during the painting process as I add layer upon layer, I tend to visualize the drawing without physically putting it on the canvas in detail, if at all, to paint over and loose. In this way I have the drawing in my head at all times and it remains fluid as I refine it while painting, as opposed to coloring in a fine drawing.

That is not to say there is no plan, analysis or thought process, there is all of that indeed, but when the paint hits the canvas, the process moves into its own dimension and a new conversation between me and the work begins and that conversation determines the outcome.
