Baby formula: Just when this year’s shortage of baby formula seemed to be fixed, parents are again scrambling to feed their infants. Julie Washington reports that since fall, formula supplies have been scanty in some parts of the country and northern Ohio. This comes at a time when parents are already struggling with inflation and a national shortage of children’s over-the-counter medicine that spread to northern Ohio.

Domed stadium: The majority of Greater Clevelanders support adding a dome to FirstEnergy Stadium, according to a recent poll from Baldwin Wallace University. The poll didn’t ask who they think should pay for the dome, Lucas Daprile reports. Earlier this year, Browns owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam reportedly considered seeking a new, $1 billion covered stadium that would likely involve significant taxpayer investment.

Statehouse and Politics

Housing bill: Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine must soon decide whether to sign legislation that could hike tax rates and raise development costs for affordable housing units in the state, Jake Zuckerman reports. A coalition of developers, advocates, and the Ohio Chamber of Commerce penned a formal request last week urging DeWine to veto two proposals, stating they’ll create “unintended and unnecessary impediments” for both stable living and workforce development in the state.

Ransomware attack: The state Supreme Court sided with an insurance company Tuesday, ruling its contract to cover a healthcare company’s “direct physical loss of or damage to media” doesn’t include a ransom payment to a hacker, Jake Zuckerman reports. The case arose after unknown hackers in 2019 illicitly seized access to data and systems of EMOI, a software company that helps medical offices set appointments, store records and handle billing.

Flooded Senate: The floor of the Ohio Senate, usually the location of politicians’ speeches, was covered in inches of water Tuesday thanks to a a torrent of water coming from a burst pipe in a ceiling, Jeremy Pelzer reports.

Northeast Ohio News

'Judge Joan': Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Judge Joan Synenberg finds herself in familiar territory this December and January. Cory Shaffer reports that for the second time in 16 years, the highly regarded Synenberg, who is a Republican, is fresh off a general election defeat by a challenger armed with no judicial experience but had a Democratic Party endorsement. And just like the first time, another vacancy on the bench could allow Synenberg to remain in a black robe in the Justice Center — for a few years, at least.

Turnpike crash:  Francisco Gutierrez-Martinez, 30, of Cleveland, was one of the fatalities in a 46-vehicle pileup Friday on the Ohio Turnpike that killed four people overall. The three others who died in the accident were Bernard M. Bloniarz, 59, of Napoleon; Julie E. Roth, 37, of Toledo; and Emma L. Smith, 19, of Webberville, Mich.

Sports betting: Ohioans can place real, legal bets on sporting events on Jan. 1. So, where do they go to get in on the action? Sean McDonnell reports there are a lot of options.

Crime and Courts

U.S. Marshals: Nearly 52,000 people have been arrested by the U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force since its inception in 2003. Of those, 2,037 suspects were accused of murder. The unit marks its 20-year milestone next summer, Molly Walsh reports, and in that time it has become a model for departments across the country.
